Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Sounds like most of the sub-custom-historic Gibsons I've seen in stores over the last few years. Gibson really needs to get it's act together.

If I were to buy a gibson, I'd do it through a reputable independant dealer who inspects and sets up each guitar, and I'd give them a decent size list of faults I see on new gibsons that I don't want on my new guitar.

That's great advice; I bought my R7 at one of the dealers that advertises on the LPF and he was able to intelligently describe the differences between the two he had in stock. I bought my Pro Reverb from him, too, because I really trust and like the guy.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been jonesin' for one of those since the last MF catalog arrived. Now, I'm cured.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

BTW JeffB, Im very sorry for you. Waiting patiently and paying big bucks shouldn't get nice pals into troubles.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

You might not want to take this suggestion, but I offer it anyway. You've waited and saved up your hard earned just to be disappointed. I think you should consider not being a Gibson customer any longer, and returning it and buying something else. That's what did it for me when I owned my gibby then I realized what overrated junk it is.

I did a blind study for my psych class last year in which I had guitar students from school here participate in. It consisted of 4 guitars, a gibson les paul, a mid priced copy and a POS copy, the 4th was a departure, my ESP EC-1000, which doesn't have the gibson shape exactly. They were sat down blindfolded, then handed a guitar which was plugged in and they were to play it for about a minute or two, then went to the next. After each one I had them rate on a scale of 1-10 in three categories, sound, feel, and playability. The ESP came out on top almost all of the time, except for those who already owned gibsons and could tell right away what it was so they were biased. The rest of the time after everything was averaged out The Gibson pretty much was tied in last place with the POS copy. The POS actually beat the gibson on a few trials. What came on top were the Dillion LP copy and the ESP.

Not incredibly scientific, but it was interesting.

Ya JeffB, what's Musician Friend's return policy?
Can you return it for a refund?

I'd probably just go to a music store and find something that plays like a dream, or just get a custom heritage built for me.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

What do you guys all lay in wait to play all pile on the rabbit?

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

How many piece is the back, I hear the 04-05s have a 2 piece back. I hate poor quality. It just makes me feel bad when i work hard to get the money to buy something. I would be a little pissed a MF for sending me a poor quality guitar. I would ask whoever sent it if they did an inspection before they sent it. If it were me I would send it back if I even had teh slightest doubt in my mind.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

that sucks man, nothing pisses me off mroe than getting ripped off, if its nt prfect for that price it should be replaced. I wonder if gibson consideres the deluxe to be of the higher end models like the standard and customs? My guess is they probably treat it as a classic with alot less attention and care when being made. not to bash and they suck but shame on gibson!

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

there shouldn't be ANY issues at all with a guitar at that price point.

Friggin hell, 1500 is a lot of cash to drop on one axe... I personally would send it back and get something from a shop or that I could see and play infront of me.

I'd look second hand as well, I imagine 1500 s/h will get you a mint guitar in the US.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

I just bought a used 56Reissue Lester for about that price. Excellent guitar.

No offence, but let's not bash the LPF. I've found lots of useful info there - here's a thread where a guy wasn't satisfied with his Gibson.

I just looked at that, jesus christ. I was starting to think I'd give Gibson a second chance at some point but they just lost a customer for life.

1. I've owned Gibby crap

2. The majority of Gibbies I've seen or played recently were total crap, with good ones being the minority.

3. That right there is a perfect example of unacceptable QC. You know why? Because they couldn't just say, "heh heh, well golly gosh gee we must have missed that one". That's such an obvious flaw but it was sent for finishing anyway. There are plenty of people along the assembly line that would have seen that and chose to let it go through.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

I'm just sick and tired of everyone bashing gibson Les Pauls. When you find the right one, it'll smoke every other guitar you've ever played. In this market, you tend to get exactly what you pay for. Dealing with MF is always a crapshoot, no matter what guitar it is they are selling. They don't inspect anything. I'm sure most companies ship their 2nds to MF. Remember when you used to see guitars labeled as 2nd's on the back of the headstock? I do. BUt not anymore. Just my theory.

Most of the time when someone labels LPs as over rated pieces of junk it comes from guys that have an axe to grind (no pun intended) or they played a crappy one that's been sitting around abused at GC for months with wrothless strings on it, or they just can't afford it so they jump on the Gibson Sucks bandwagon.

I do not agree with their latest pricing strategies nor their new internet policy that screws over the indie dealers, but I'll stand by my two Gibsons. They smoke everything else I've ever owned.

You got a crapped out one, send it back and try again.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

I'd do a couple of things. I'd call or write a letter to Gibson. I'd definitely call MF and gripe to them. If you can live with it's flaws, they'll probably knock $300-$500 off of the price. Otherwise, send it back and tell them THEY'RE paying for the return postage. The first Gibson Les Paul I bought was a classic plus from AMS and when I got it it had no flame at all. I sent it back, made them pay for it, and made them refund my money. I ended up buying one off Ebay. At least that way I could at least see what it looked like. I knew if it wasn't setup well I could cure that.

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

Right on Scott!! I wanted to basicly say all of that, I just didn't feel like typing it..lol

Re: Got my Les Paul Deluxe...kinda disappointed

scott, i'm trying to undersatnd your point here ...

.. are you defending the reasonableness of a guy spending $1500 on a brand new guitar and being anything less than totally thrilled with it in every way (fit / finish / function / feel / etc.?) .. you said "in this market, you get what you pay for" ... do you think the guitar as described is "what he paid for?"

i'm glad you have had positive experiencesa with gibsons .. i hope i have a chance to have postive experiences with gibsons one day - i havent had any direct experiences with them ... but, c'mon man - show a little compassion for a bro who got a crappy deal on an expensive guitar ... he's not complaining about a $99 squire or even a $299 epi ...

Good words Scott. Gibson definitely has some QC issues these days, but I absolutely love my two (production!) LPs. The '91 pre-Historic Classic I picked up on Ebay last year is a killer guitar in all departments. There are a lot of pro players out there with a production Gibson as their main instrument - for good reason.

They do need to sort out their QC though, if they're going to retain credibility. :smack:
