GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

Haven't even opened it to see. Got the 6100 with E34LS's installed and the same old preamp 12ax7s it already have.

Can I just say WOW? What an improvement over the Sovteks. The amp has more grease on it. Attitude, size, more gain, more open. It's like a mod was done to the amp to open it up and make it prettier, smoother, and meaner.

So what you're saying is that NOW it sounds like a real Marshall!:laugh2:

Real Marshalls use EL-34's...

I know what'cha mean...my JCM-800 came with 6550's and when I rebuilt it for EL-34's it became my idea of what a Marshall is supposed to sound like.

My 800 had GE 6550s in it and I converted mine over at that time to Siemens...Had that same feeling of "wow" when cranking up and playing through it....I thought it really had that Marshall grind, instead of it being cleaner and headroomier...It's gotta have EL34s in my opinion.:13:

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

So, does this throw a monkey wrench in to the Bogner plan? :laugh2:

I'm with Lew and John, Marshalls are all about EL34's. Their sound is just "it".

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

I've got a Marshall with 6550s and a "Marshall" with EL-34s. I prefer the 6550s. I'm one of the few.

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

No, this thread was not saying I changed from another tube type to El34's
it's saying I didn't care for the Sovtek EL34s and that Tesla's rock!

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

Tesla JJ's are a real bargain. They used to be cheaper, and raised their price by a few bucks, but they're great tubes. I have them in all my amps. They only cost about $12 a piece, and they're as good as anything more expensive.

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

I really like the sound of the E34L's in my Plexi, can't wait to see what sounds I can coax out of 'em when I get Power Scaling installed.

Tesla EL-34's are most cool ones, have used little else than those since the early 90's.

I still own like 3 duets of those that I bought from Audio Glassics.....

I like the GT EL34L tubes I currently have in my Marshall and rated for 30 watts plate dissipation...Strong sounding tubes...

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

I was under the impression that E34L and EL34 were different tubes, yet they are being spoken of as one in the same in this thread...

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

I'm about to retube my amp, it's been EL34 amp originally but I'm curious how would it sound with 6L6's. I play mainly cleans and mainly Strats so it seems to be a nice idea, though I can't just forget about that outstanding EL34's crunch.. It truly rocks.. !! tough decision :D

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

When my JCM 900 had 5881s, I was ready to toss it in the river, and I often wondered what promted me to buy it in the first place.:smack:

Now that it has EL 34s, life is much better!

SHRED what is this POWER SCALING?

check it out at www.londonpower.com - this is the next big thing in amps in my opinion. By lowering the plate voltage (but keeping the bias current constant), you can actually reduce the volume of the amp in a way that's 100% transparent. This sounds much better than using an attenuator and doesn't harm the power tubes. In fact, because you're running them at a lower plate voltage, power tubes run with power scaling have the lifetime of a preamp tube!

One cool thing about the power scaling though is that the lower plate voltage of the power tubes means you have to reduce the output signal of the preamp to stop it distorting excessively (providing you just scale the power amp). However, this means that you can control exactly how much distortion is from the preamp and how much is from the power amp. This in practice enables you to make a high headroom power tube behave like a low headroom / gainy one, and vica versa. I can't wait to get it installed, should be awesome.

Here's an installation review of the power scaling kit:

http://bruceclement.com/music/psk.htm

but I'm getting the newer released PS-Box which has all that electronics inside a box that can be mounted in the headbox; that means you only have to run 3 or 4 wires inside the amp.

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

Oh my god that's amazing and the sound samples seem really accurate

WOW WOW WOW WOW

I wish I had this in my Marshalls but it looks like it may alter the amp.

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

Yeah the kit alters the amp heavily, but the PS-box only requires a few wires and (optional) the drive compensation control. Nothing that couldn't be reversed so the amp looks 100% stock afterwards though. My PS-Box is shipping tommorrow, can't wait to fit it in my Plexi :D

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

OMG this power scaling thing looks awesome
shredaholic, please report back on how your installation goes and how it sounds.

Re: GOT MY MARSHALL BACK WITH E34LS installed

Sovtek tubes can make even the best amp sound horrible.
CRAP-garbage-useless-toneless-horrendous junk!
I've never liked any Sovtek power tube I've tried.
GARBAGE.
