Got my Mesa back today.

I took it to my tech 6 or 7 weeks ago. Long wait. There was a strange static noise coming from my amp when you tapped the top of it.

My tech replaced the screen grid resistors and some other resistors, some caps, I don't know, the amp hadn't been worked on most likely in about 15 years.... He replaced the tube sockets and I had the the preamp retubed (just put new power tubes in about 2 weeks before I took it to him).

Along the way he called me and said that someone had modded it at some point. Some parts were changed to make the amp smoother and darker and asked if I wanted it or not. He said I could try it stock and if I wanted he would switch it back if I didn't like it. The amp is brighter and louder (****) now but it sounds even better than before. I couldn't stop playing guitar today... my strat sounds so good through it. I already loved the amp before and now I'm obsessed. I usually run a reverb in the loop but today... nothing... sparkly and warm at the same time. It sounds huge still. You can hear every nuance, it's ridiculously sensitive.

The only thing I don't like is he told me it would be louder than when I brought it in, just because the amp was so worn out from age. It's louder... and not by a subtle amount... and that is not what I needed considering it already feels louder than your average half stack. I probably need to buy an attenuator.

But I'm extremely happy. The tone is amazing. I remember when I was thinking about buying it, a few people told me to just because it was my dream amp and it would make me happy for years. I've had the amp for over 2 years now and I don't see it going anywhere. As I've figured it out I've really learned to dial it in and it's just become MY amp. I love it.

And with my strat going straight into it, I have so much tone it's ridiculous. :D

what's wrong with the master volume?
You might find that what seems too loud at home is just fine when playing next to a drummer and bassist. you can also angle the cab up so it hits you rather than the audience so when you are in a band context you can hear all that clarity and subtlety that you are enjoying at home.

Its way cool that your amp is running at its best now tho. Awesome.

Re: Got my Mesa back today.

Maybe swap the speaker for a lower efficiency model with similar tone...:scratchch

Re: Got my Mesa back today.

The important thing is that it sounds that much better for now. You'll figure out the volume issue later I'm sure.

Congrats!

I don't think anyone makes a lower volume EVM substitute.

Congrats dude, I bet the amp kicks ass now. I remember when I got my bassman back after having it worked on for a few months, it was heaven.

Re: Got my Mesa back today.

Yeah, I played mine last night for a couple hours... I'm thinking about keeping it.

It helps that no one wants to buy it.

Re: Got my Mesa back today.

in my world of shared walls, louder definitely isn't better. but alas I have some gear that requires volume to do its thang.

I already replaced the EVM with a Texas Heat. That took the volume down and gave me a warmer sound vs the compressed EVM but its still crazy loud.

What kind of Mesa is it?

1980 Mesa MkII

Yeah, she sounds great!

I want it... I just don't have the money for one.

Volume is the key to tone. :D
