Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

I have bought from Mc Master before, didn't know they sold magnets. How cool is that?

Lol, I just read an ad for a pair of sony earplugs and it said: With Neodymium magnets for powerfull bass and clear highs.

Yeah, ND has been used in headphones for a while.

I think you if you find the sound too intense, you should do something to make the magnetic field more tolerable, like have a spacer in-between the contact points, wood, paper, cardboard, non-magnetic metal. something to try while your at this

from my understanding, the stronger a magnet is, the harder and more metallic it sounds, if you can weaken it, it'll give a softer more mellow attack, with less presence.
I think this will be a pretty hard job to get desirable results off the back, but if you mess around for some time, you could find yourself with something decent...... hopefully!

Good Idea. Just like the Dimarzio Air Buckers that would probably have much better results.

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

Neo is almost 10 times as strong as ceraminc. Neo bar magnets can be very diffucult to work with! I use Neo magnets in HB pickups; it works well if you use slugs (rather than screw polepieces) in both coils, and put small Neo magnets on the back of each slug, varying the size to balance the output for the different strings if necessary. How it sounds depends on how big the magnets are. Magnets about 3/16 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch long give a very good sound. Magnets 3/8 inch in diameter and 1/4 inch long produce the most unbelieveably horrible string pull, but you can get a huge output. Such large magnets make the guitar unplayable.

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

Using neo magnets in place of alnico rod magnets in a Fender type single coil is not a good idea. The string pull would be horrendous, and the sensitivity bad, because Neo has a pretty small permeability.

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

I still haven't pulled the Custom out and swapped the magnets yet (laziness). So far, I've placed the bar magnet on top of a row of the slugs for the bridge Custom for the heck of it. It has a slight metallic ringing that I'm guessing is the string pull. Keep in mind, though, that this is sitting on top of a high-output humbucker at proper string height, it's getting pretty close to the strings. Tone with it on there is MASSIVE, takes the Custom tone and really cranks up the output and sustain. The real fun is putting it on top of a row of the Alnico poles on the Stag-Mag humbucker in the neck. Tone is much louder and will sustain for ages. I was playing along with some old GNR and with that magnet on top of the neck p'up was really nailing Slash's lead tone. Hopefully this weekend I'll get around to yanking the Custom and swapping the magnet around; sorry for the delay.
I'll try and find my computer mic and try to make some sound clips, although I'm not making any promises, I'm a slacker:P

Should try putting an A2 in the Custom then that Neo mag on the outside of the pup on the underside of the baseplate. Might sound cool.

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

Watch putting that neo mag on other pickups. You can change the gauss of the mags in the pups.

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

Interesting points guys, no big loss if I kill the old ceramic magnet in the Custom, but the Stag Mag has Alnico poles, so I sure don't want to mess them up.
Fritze, I like your idea a lot. I really think I'd like a Custom-Custom, but already find the regular Custom too low-output, so maybe putting the Neo underneath would pump it up a little bit volume-wise.

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

Neodymium are interesting magnets. If you design the magnetic circuit right, you can get a very high fidelity circuit, given the capitance in your cable doesn't drop it (hint hint, preamp!). I'd get like some small individual bar magnets for each string to lower eddy currents and keep it from sounding too shrill. You seriously can get some good bass and treble theoretically, though. I'll draw you up a diagram of what you might want to try after school.

I myself am working on a very unique design of a humbucker involving ND mags...

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

lol he has, but he can't free his strings from the magnet, they're stuck down :laugh2:

Re: Got my Neodymium mag, going in the Custom

Be careful: alnico magnets are susceptible to strong external fields (such as that of a neo magnet) and can become magnetically damaged. At least that was what Erno Zwaan told me once.
