Man....that's an ugly cut of wood to be doing a clear finish on.

What?! You must be joking... black limba is absolutely stunning to look at!

I think this a taste thing. I can't understand why anyone would want to show a cut of wood that looks that way. The grain is fairly uneven and the dark veneer is nowhere near uniform. The lack of symmetry makes it aestehtically unpleasing to the eye and the significant distinction between light and dark makes it hard to take....it's too busy and doesn't lead the eye to any particular place on the body.

Judging by how folks have gotten all crazy over it I'm assuming it sounds quite good. I'd be interested in hearing a few clips.

I personally prefer simple finishes, solid colors, or a nice dye/translucent on mahogany or maple.

sorry to hear about all the trouble fret....it was a beautiful slab of wood, too bad he had to hack it to shreds...you'll get something you enjoy I'm sure....just gotta look a little longer to get it

I agree: definitely try to fix it. Pieces of wood like that are rare, so don't waste the opportunity. Get a partial refund, or at least make him pay for all the repairs (you take the guitar to another luthier, obviously)

Good luck!

The parts are long gone, and I'll have the money back in my paypal account by Monday. I just didn't have the time/energy/money to see this project through in the condition it was in. I am definitely going to try again once I'm out of school in a couple of years, when I can afford to do it right and go with a competent builder.
