Got the Tele Bug... What is a good one for about $500?

I played a friends Squire Tele last night and was actually pretty impressed. I was kinda taken back by how this 'cheap' guitar played and sounded... Played almost as good as my old faithful gibson explorer.

I havn't even looked at fenders in years... So I have no clue as to what is a good player, what's a rip off... I'm not against a Squire and throwing some cool pickups in it and calling it a day if they are decent... But I was thinking going maybe Mexican? Maybe road worn? Want to keep it under $500 new or used... $350 even better as it won't be my main guitar.

So fire away some advice!

The Nashville Deluxes with the 3 pups are nice for around that price looked at a few of them on evilbay for a friend.

You could BUILD one with whatever parts you choose, for less than your budget. I think I have $200 (definitely less than $300) into mine, since it was all used parts. And it's exactly the way I want, since Fender/Squier doesn't make a model the way I want one.

The Squier Vintage Modified range is good to go straight out of the box.

G&L Tribute Series ASAT is great value for money, especially pre-owned. The Classic does traditional twang. The Special has the big MFD single coils, combining twang with P90-esque balls.

The La Cabronista Tele is an interesting idea. Even the Squier versions are fun.

Tele's are hard to **** up, a little setup work and some good pickups and you're golden. Just another reason to love them.

x2, I have a $100 SX Tele and a $$$$ Tele I made out of really good parts, and they are both...pretty much a Tele

Squier Vintage Modified with P90s. So sexy.

Except the one piece necks, they seem more prone to warping, and all around less rigid than a neck with a separate fret board. I feel like I have to fight with the setup more on my Teles.

What's the deal with the baja I'm hearing so much good about?

Old Hamer T51....might pay a little more than $500 but they are awesome guitars.

That might be just the ones you have. I have plenty of 1-piecers in both strat and tele and have had no issue. Certainly the fact its a tele doesn't make it intrinsically harder or easier to setup, warped neck or not.

On the squier side, the classic vibe thinline teles that I have played have been consistently good guitars. I got a squier body loaded with Duncan Deisgned pickups, threw an old neck on it and it is a great guitar. Otherwise, just about any of the recent production stuff from Mexico has been pretty good.

I have a Squier J5 model... straight out the box... EXCELLENT! The pickups were not what I wanted... not bad mind you, just not what I wanted. the guitar and the new pickups ran me $500 exactly.
