Well, I recently moved the lower tone to bridge only, and that brightened up the neck/mid position. I like the wide open middle for now, but in case that changes I'll keep this in the back of my mind.
This may sound strange for a Strat (and totally wrong for vintage aficionados) but I have my Strat wired with a master tone done Gibson 50s style with a .022 cap. The smaller value gives a less extreme rolloff compared to .047, and 50s wiring is a bit brighter than modern which IMO results in something similar to what you're after. The added bonus is it frees up a hole in the pickguard for a Fralin blender.
