Gravity Picks

I am always on the hunt for a good pick.
I’m aware of Gravity picks, V-Picks, Dragons heart (I do have a few of these but I’m not loving them) etc...
but I just haven’t pulled the trigger on them....until now.

Just for the hell of it I bought a gravity pick from sweetwater.
I got the 1.5mm Classic pick.
I was skeptical at spending $4.99 for just one pick but I’ve got to say that I’m pretty impressed!

It’s very comfortable and stays in place without slipping. The edges have a nice bevel on them which helps the pick glide through the string effortlessly.
I’ll be curious to see how well it holds up over time. It seems like a very solidly made pick...

Re: Gravity Picks

Do Gravity picks chirp like V-picks? After using Primetone, BlueChip, and Wegen, I can’t do thick picks without the right-hand bevel.

Re: Gravity Picks

Well, I’ve never used a V-pick s I couldn’t compare directly.
It to me they seem to chirp the same as the Clayton acytal picks I’ve been using.
So, not really any more or less than any other pick.

Re: Gravity Picks

Oh....I just re-read your post.
When I said there was a bevel I meant the way the pick thickness tapers at the edges and not how some picks have a slight twist at the tip to have a particular angle that the pick hits the string.

Re: Gravity Picks

I got a few of those from the last NAMM I went to- they are a little thick and clicky for me, but I can see how I might use it as some sort of effect. I don't think I could get used to using one all the time.

The bevel I’m speaking of simulates natural wear. On 1mm or less it’s unnecessary. On thick stuff, like 1.5mm, it really makes a diffeeence.

Also, BlueChip picks are $35 each. They’re made from a super expensive material that basically doesn’t wear. I have one I use for acoustic guitar and mandolin, but don’t use it for electric.

Re: Gravity Picks

Gotcha.

I’ve looked at the Blue Chip a while back now that you mention them.
Iirc, the price scared me off!!
A lot of the players that Troy Grady has profiled have talked about them too. Andy Wood immediately comes to mind.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure they won’t replace my regular picks but for $5 I figured, why not?

Re: Gravity Picks

Love the Gravity picks! Use them exclusively. They are expensive but I
haven't noticed any wear at all in the year I've been using them.
Haven't lost one either!

I love "THE RAZER", black 2 mm. I wouldnt try to strum with it, but for speed work( the little I have), trem picking etc, they really slice thru, easy to pinch and I like their tone

That’s the one with a more pointed tip...right?
I have a mixed love affair with pointy tip picks. I go through phases when I feel like they are the best pick ever made and then I feel like I can’t even hold them correctly....lol

Re: Gravity Picks

I bought a pack of assorted Gravity picks, but I prefer the V-Picks, specifically the Red Rocker. I like some of the thicker picks, up to about 4mm. The Screamer, Tradition, Tradition Lite and the 1980 are also favorites. The Red Rocker though is the one I like and use the most. The thicker picks are good for practice sessions.

I've also been trying the stone picks from Stoneworks.com. They are VERY fast across the strings, and produce good tone.

My baseline pick has been the standard 1.14 Dunlop Tortex or Gators for many, many years, but I like the grippiness of the Stone and V-Picks.

I was looking at the V picks too. They will probably be a future purchase. The Red Rocker seemed to be the best fit for me as well.
I need to look into the stone picks you mentioned. I haven’t heard of those.
Thanks!

Yea, not TOO pointy tho, at least for me.

Re: Gravity Picks

I love exotic picks on acoustic instruments, but still think the normal stuff is best for electric. If everything besides Tortex 1.14 and .88 disappeared, I'd be ok.

Have you ever tried the Clayton Acteyl picks? They are similar to the tortex but a little more “slippery” across the strings.

Yeah, there are more than a few of those in my collection. Locally, Dunlop is more readily available, so I have way more Tortex. I really like the white Tortex Flex picks. They’re supposed to be more flexible than regular ones. All I can attest to is different.

Re: Gravity Picks

Here’s something to try. I saw Andy James on an Andertons video and the only product he could push was his signature pick from Dunlap. I tried one then bought a dozen. I’m spoiled now none of my old picks sound right or feel right. The thickness is right the shape is right as is the perimeter bevel. And they last a long time.

I used to be a .70 .88 player. I tried a 1.5 Gravity pick and liked it, but I like the new AJ pick best.

I’ve been hearing a lot about these picks lately.
I just checked them out on the Dunlop site.
They make a Standard and Jumbo version. They all look to be basically a Jazz pick shape.
I’m wondering, do you know if they are actually the size of a regular pick (Standard) or slightly oversized (Jumbo) or are these actually the size of a regular Jazz pick?
Jazz picks are just too small for me.

Those Andy James picks, they’re all 2.0mm?
