Gravity Picks

Re: Gravity Picks

Picks have always been my favorite gear. I love trying out new ones, buying new ones, talking about new ones, shopping for them... picks are the best.

Re: Gravity Picks

I love exotic picks on acoustic instruments, but still think the normal stuff is best for electric. If everything besides Tortex 1.14 and .88 disappeared, I'd be ok.

Completely agree -I don't have any issues with gripping, shape, edge or tone of the ole' Yellow Tortex so I don't usually rock the boat

-HOWEVER -I bought some amazing wood picks in Dublin Ireland last year that are just awesome for Acoustics, I also own stone pics that are also fun on Acoustics and this year this guy on Instagram who likes my band hand made me custom pics out of quarters with one side carved as Washington changed into a skeleton and my bands name engraved on the Eagle. -They were a lot of work, I actually felt guilty, so much so I asked for his address and sent him a bunch of Vinyl, CDs and other stuff as thanks.

I definitely suggest trying wooden picks for acoustic -the downside is they are crazy expensive.

Re: Gravity Picks

I am always on the hunt for a good pick.
I’m aware of Gravity picks, V-Picks, Dragons heart (I do have a few of these but I’m not loving them) etc...
but I just haven’t pulled the trigger on them....until now.

Just for the hell of it I bought a gravity pick from sweetwater.
I got the 1.5mm Classic pick.
I was skeptical at spending $4.99 for just one pick but I’ve got to say that I’m pretty impressed!

It’s very comfortable and stays in place without slipping. The edges have a nice bevel on them which helps the pick glide through the string effortlessly.
I’ll be curious to see how well it holds up over time. It seems like a very solidly made pick...

Looks nice enough, kinda like a 2XH take on gel picks?

How's the grippiness vs. Dunlop Gels Red/Yellow (H/XH)? Is the logo textured?

Re: Gravity Picks

Well I just ordered a few...we will see what they look like when I get them.

Good thread! Yeah I really dig trying new picks. I've been using
pretty thin picks for both acoustic and electric. Maybe I'm missing
something. Just checked out some vids on the Dunlop Andy James
Flow picks and have also ordered some. Will chime in when they arrive.

Have you washed and dried one yet in the drug pocket of your jeans? Need to know if they still perform after the moisture and heat -that's the true test of a pick :)

Lmao...
No I haven’t.
I actually only bought one. I’ve used it a little to practice etc. but I don’t see it becoming a regular pick for me. Especially not at $5 per pick.

It’s a smooth surface but it’s surprisingly grippy.
Unfortunately I’ve never tried the gels yet so I can’t compare.

It seems like it’s built durable enough to last a good long time but they aren’t cheap either. So I’m sure I won’t really use them regularly.

Edit: I’m going to go check in just how the logo is “attached”.
Stand by...

If you run your fingers on this side of the pick you can feel the indentation from the logo being stamped into the pick.
I wouldn’t necessarily say that it aids much in the grip of the pick though. The material itself has some sort of something that makes it naturally grippy. It’s very comfortable really.

For years I always used the .73 Dunlop. Slowly over the years I’ve increased the thickness of the pick. I’ve settled on something around 1.5mm as my preferred thickness. It’s rigid enough to handle quick single note lines and with a lighter touch, works well enough for strumming.

I’ve seen Andy Wood using a Blue Chip (?) pick on mandolin. They make some for guitar as well. The price is somewhere around $50 for one! Supposedly they don’t wear out or something like that.

I’ve heard of the stone picks you mentioned too but haven’t tried one. They are both in my list.

If you have a pic of the pick your fan made you, I’d love to see it!!
Sounds really cool

I have a few, not a big fan. One of them is heavily beveled, the other is just punched out.

My favorite acoustic picks are the BlueChip TAD60 ($35) and Wegen TF-140 ($7.50). Those are essentially the two flagship picks amongst the bluegrass crowd, for good reason. I've been using the same one of each for a few years, no wear at all, and they sit in one place in your fingers without moving.

He uses a CT-55 (big triangle, same pick I mentioned above but a hair thinner with a different bevel), and a Jazz III style BC for electric. Yeah, $35 each seems nuts, until the first time you try one, thinking, "I'm just gonna pick a little," then 20 minutes later, you're sitting there amazed by how well the pick sits in your hand and glides right through the strings.

It's not that the pick isnt worth it, but my playing isn't.

One of these days I’ll get one for sure but yeah, it’s not easy spending that on a single pick. Lol
