great cabs for HUGE live sound?

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

The Orange 4x12s sound fantastic. Although it isn't fashionable to like Marshalls any more, I love my angled 4x12 with greenbacks.

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

I think the AORs stock already have way too much bass. Going into a bassy 4x12" with bassy speakers with the bass boost knob pulled out you're possibly going to find yourself WAIST DEEP IN FARKIN' MUD!

If that's your thing, then I guess it could work for you but if you want to retain midrange growl and top-end detail/sparkle then you may look for a slightly more modest option.

Driven with an AOR an Marshall 1960 4x12 will be sufficiently "big enough" for what your shooting for but if you have the extra cash, then an Orange 4x12 is a step above in quality and a slightly looser/smoother/darker response.

In terms of speaker selection, I would strongly recommend avoiding celestion G12T-75s. Boomy bottem-end, hollow midrange, and laser beam top-end will make your AOR sound ugly. Vintage 30s and G12H-30s, especially in combination work great. This is the setup I use with my AOR-50 series II. I'm using an x-pattern of WGS V30 clones and some old G12H-30s from the 70s. The V30s bring out the cut and punch n' growl, and the H-30s are sweet and warm. If I could find my damn step-down voltage converter (my amp is an American export wired for 110v) I could make a demo for you.

Greenbacks also sound good, though darker and looser, are not really a safe option with a 100 watt head.

Forgot about those. I find them to be another one of those great cabs, that have the same vibe going as the rectifier cabs. Both are oversized, closed back, and are loaded with Celestion V30s.

That's the three features I would be looking for. A lot of people knock the V30s, but they will always be my favorite speaker, maybe not playing alone at home, but by far when I hit the stage.

I would recommend the Krank cabs.
Oversized, Closed back, and Ported means that its going to have nothing but a tight low end.

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

the only time the AOR sounds bassy to me is when i hit the bass boost at lower master volume settings (12 o clock or lower), as you crank up the master the other frequencies balance it out. I think it just goes to show its an amp meant to be played full tilt and nothing less :cool2:

I still havent found a good hard rocking tone at standard tuning but this amp just loves downtuned riffage. Suddenly things come to life.

Huh, interesting. I generally run it with the bass down around 2 and the treble boost pulled and it still sounds dark as hell to me. And that's with a fairly bright guitar too. Though I guess it's been a while since I've ran it with the master above 12 o'clock and I'm pretty much always in standard tuning.

Cheers for the reply, dude. :fing2:

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

Maybe a bit out of your price range? But these Mills Cabs are for REAL!!http://millsacoustics.com/ I plugged my Princeton Revevb into a Mills cab, And it made that amp sound HUGH!!

actually the used prices on those arent bad at all, and a few artist i aspire to tone wise endorse them. Thanks for the suggestion, this may be on the top of my list

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

Ever consider a Splawn cab? I find myself cutting the bass down on my head when i really crank the volume and get the speakers pushing some air.

Re: great cabs for HUGE live sound?

I think a Mesa or Orange cab would be just the ticket if you want a 4x12, but I second the EarCandy BuzzBomb suggestion. Mine has easily stood up to 4x12s. They've got a bit of a lead time but it's worth it.

That RedStar company looks very similar minus the wait time though...
