Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Yeah, they weren't Marshalls anymore after the switch to 5881s. They would be a great reissue, but I think Marshall totally devalued the whole JCM900 line with the 5881 switch.

My Friedman JJ 100. I play a ton of hard rock and metal but also some classic rock, country rock, etc. It does it all and is voiced just....right.

80's JC120 everyone I have played has been a monster. I have owned two of them.

Well of course it would be the Marshall that I completely rebuilt into a '68-era 50 watter.

It's so awesome, I can slap an SM57 on the speaker cab, do a simple hi & lo pass and it sounds great recorded.

Hmmm... my favorite amp I have is my '72 Superlead, but if I had to live with just one amp, it would be my Friedman BE100

Green Matamp GT120 and original silverface Sunn model T.

Both at once, obviously.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

I would run my 2100 with the gain sensitivity either off (couldn't do that on the SL-X) or at half with an overdrive out front for more. I was able to get a "cleanish" tone out of it but I like a little hair on my clean tone. But yeah, sparkly cleans were not it's trick. Balls out Marshall drive is what it was meant for. That's one model I wish Marshall would reissue.
I have owned a few of those amps love them and agree 100% on it being one they should reissue!! Like the JCM 900 Dual Masters MUCH better than the dual reverb amps. The old Hot Rod Mod Carvin X50 I brought home yesterday sounds a LOT like a 2100 in fact! Only it also has a REALLY good clean side!

Fryette Sig:X. I'm pretty sure there's nothing it can't do. It even made me eggs the next morning. With bacon.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

The main reason I ask is because in a year I’ll be able to upgrade to my amp.
The Roadster Head was among those I was considering.
Alongside that I was considering:
Diezel VH4
Revv Generator 120 MKII
Engl Invader 120 II
Marshall JVM410H
For reference I’m looking at 4 channel amps because I need a clean sound, Heavier Rhythm for Thrash, Heavy Rhythm for Extended range progressive stuff, Liquid like lead channel.

The Roadster does many levels of dirt. Liquid leads, crunchy rhythms, moments where it’s right on the edge... It’s the kind of amp that could make me rethink my twenty-plus distortion pedals.

I miss my old Carvin X-amp combo. It had 6L6's in it, I think that it was an '86. Made it into a 2x12 cab when it died.
Randall RG-120ES half stack. Killer on it's own and takes pedals great.
Line 6 Spidervalve HDII 100 watt head. I can get anything with it.

Meh... I've lost track of how many great amps I've had. There was no best, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be one of my Friedmans... for driven tones OR cleans. I had five rock models, and my current Buxom Betty is the best clean amp I've ever had... including the amazing Tone King Metropolitan that it's currently sitting next to. My point is, there's always another great amp around the next corner. Even when you think you've had most of them. Same with guitars. Do yourself a favor and enjoy the one you have. It will save a lot of money. LOL!!!

50W Bogner Helios. I play hard rock/metal/classic rock. It was an anthology of Marshall amps.

The Helios Eclipse is suppose to address and improve upon the "flaws" of the Helios. It probably sounds epic.

Can't really say.

For pure modern Metal annihilation, the Peavey 6505+ head is incredible.
For smooth, refined Rock sounds, the Bogner Ecstacy and Friedman Pink Taco are beyond everything I've tried.
A friend of mine had a JTM45 combo with an SG that just NAILED early Black Sabbath.
Also I can't see myself ever parting ways with my Tweaker. It just sounds sweet.

I really can't choose.

My music store buddy's old JTM is currently suiting for sale at the store, I was tempted to take it home. Amazing glassy tones! He traded it for a Germino Club 40 and likes the Germino better. But he still digs the JTM. I got no business hauling a JTM home with the Buxom Betty and Metropolitan sitting in the man cave.

That I own, Marshall SL-X when it had Tesla EL-34s in it. Next would be the Hiwatt DR-103. Next would be the Fender ‘57 reissue tweed Twin. Very versatile. Can sound Marshally to Fendery. The Orange AD50 with EH 6CA7s is a favorite also.

Hands down the best amp I ever had the opportunity to play was Carlos Santana’s 1968 Plexi. I got to play it at The Plant studio for one session. I’ll never forget that sound. Everything I play through gets compared to that one.

Multi-Watt Triple Rectifier would be my favorite overall out of those I've owned or had some time with.
It's a tough call between that and my 99 Tremoverb with the current str440 tubes. Both heads can do many things well.

Do you think the Triple Rec covers more sonic territory than the Dual Rec, apart from just being an extra 50 watts?
