Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

The best I've ever played through was probably just my old Triple Rectifier. Nothing special really, it was just a big, mean sounding amp. I haven't played many overall honestly.

The best I've ever heard is maybe a little bit of a cheat. I saw Queen a few years ago and Brian May still just cranks a few AC30s way up and calls it good. During the quick soundcheck before they came on the amps weren't even going through the PA, but they could have just left them as is. They filled the stadium on their own, and my God it was a glorious sound. I've never heard anything like it. Best. Sound. Ever.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

I think with your 100w, switching between channels might've helped, but the 50w had a significant drop in volume when going clean. The saturation and gain character was amazing tho. What speakers did you run? I had the combo and it was really sweet with the Alnico Cream.

How'd you like the 100w vs the 50w? I think if I wanted both a killer clean tone and great overdrive/distortion, the 100w wins hands down. For pure dirt tones, the 50w sounded more aggressive and raw to my ears.

Edit: I might nab an eclipse once prices go down. I kinda shifted my focus into getting vintage players over amps. Keep me posted if you buy one!

I'm using Scumback speakers in a Marshall 1960a. Its an 80's JCM800 cab without the stereo/mono crap and it sounds amazing with every amp I have plugged into it!

I have never had the chance to play the 50 watt Helios, but yeah, the lack of versatility turns me off a little on this amp. It can do so many things incredibly well but you are limited on what you can do on the fly! I tend to prefer a 100 watter in most cases. Not because of volume but because of feel. 100 watts just has more "boldness" and "girth" in my opinion/experience.

I am shopping for an Eclipse. Looking for some sort of discount on a new one. So far the dealers aren't budging much!

I haven't really played any amps other than those I've owned, and for the style I play I prefer a sparkly clean platform that can be juiced by boosting the mids or hitting the front end with an OD pedal. As close as I'll ever get to crunch would be a searing blues lead tone. My favorite to date is my current amp - a Louis Electric Columbia Reverb ... sort of a hot-rodded Princeton 1-12 combo.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

I play hard rock/heavy blues and occasionally foray into r&b/soul and folky Americana type stuff. The best (or at least my favorite) amps I've found for what i like and the overall quality:

multi-channel: Marshall JVM series
single channel: JCM800 2204 model
metal amp: late 90's MESA Dual Rec Tremoverb
clean amp: Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue, Vibroverb Reissue, 4x10 Bassman
boutique multi-channel: Friedman BE50 Deluxe
boutique single channel: Friedman Dirty Shirley
bass Amp: Jaguar 200

The best I ever played was the Carol-Ann Tucana 3. I also loved their Triptik amp too.

Expensive though.

That said, there are so many great amps these days it's hard to go wrong.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

As said - soooo many great amps today.

1979 - not so much.

Today, whatever you need, with more channels, more features, and the old ones reissued if that's your bag. And if modeling ok as many in one box as you can handle.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

My first good amp was a 1965 BF Fender Bandmaster rig with the small 212. That started a long love affair with Fender amps. I've owned an original DR and a Tremolux 210 rig, but at one time or another I've played on virtually every BF Fender. Showmans, Twins, Pros, Vibroluxes, Supers...all great amps, but the Tremolux was absolutely one of the most perfect club-sized amps ever. At 35 watts, I could crank it, and I loved the spongey feel.

My Bandmaster was stolen in 1972 and I replaced it with a SS SUNN Solos II 212 combo. I wanted a used BF Twin, but couldn't find one available and I needed an amp NOW! The SUNN beat out all the SS competitors from Acoustic Control, Kustom, etc., as well as a couple of SF Fenders and the VT-22 and VT-40 Ampegs. It had a warmer, more tube-like tone than the other SS amps. (I've always preferred it over the JC-120, which I find grainy and etched.) I needed an amp with powerful cleans, and the Solos II did a wonderful job for me for over 20 years.

The amp that got me back into tubes was an original Fender Super Champ 110 combo with an EV speaker. Like every modern Fender I've played the distortion channel sucked. But the amp sounded marvelous when wide-open. Not quite enough clean headroom for the rhythm parts in my band, but our band practices got a lot louder. A tremendous amp.

I wanted to move back to tube amps and in the '90s, I acquired the DR and Tremolux, a Peavey Rock Master head, a Fender 75 head and 112 cab, and a Marshall JCM 800 4010 112 50-watt combo. All were very good amps, but they all had weaknesses. I went on a quest and played a LOT of amps. Nothing seemed to fit my needs. I was frustrated.

Of course I knew about Mesa Boogie...I pored over their catalogs religiously. They were made of unobtainium, and RARE, so rare I'd never played one. Too expensive. But I walked into a pawn shop one day and found a fabulous price on a Mark III Coliseum head that was mis-marked as a .50 Caliber. It seemed like I couldn't get the cash out of my wallet fast enough. I never even plugged it in. A couple of days later, I found a really beat matching 412 Half-Back cab, also cheap. It exceeded all my expectations (which were pretty damn high!) Great cleans, and that soaring, singing Mesa lead tone. It was so inspiring, and now I had the dynamic cleans I needed, but also a great lead voice. I started getting compliments from other players and the audience on my playing and my tone. I became a better player.

I then found a DC-3 112 V30 at the same pawn shop and again really under-priced. I grabbed it and had the perfect amp for jams and small venues. Took a while to adapt my ears to the chime of the EL84s versus the wide-range muscle of 6L6s, but again...more compliments.

I've been a Mesa fan ever since, some 23 years now. I've got eight of them, and no matter which one goes to the gig, I have complete confidence in my tones. That is a GREAT feeling. BTW, I'm more of a Mark Series player than the Dual Rectos.

So the Mesas are my "Greatest Amps". But honestly, a lot just depends on each player's band situation and the guitars and the genres played. There could have been a time when a Marshall might have been my choice, but for the foreseeable future, Mesa Boogie is the best amp for me.

I knew it would be a good read when you finally weighed in on this one.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Best amp I've ever played has to be my Splawn Quick rod . However, based on everything Ive heard and read, a Friedman BE would be my dream amp..

I attempt to play rock, metal and blues..

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Here is my top 5 in no particular order I have ever played through.
1-The one off Red Fender Prosonic head I once owned that I bought from Brad Whitford. Bruce Zinky masterpiece that Bruce built himself using a Prosonic combo chassis and preamp paired with the Tone Master power supply. the only 120 watt prosonic head ever built and the only head built with reverb. WICKED rich fat and full crunch tones think if a Soldano SLO/Mesa Rec had a bigger sounding badder baby with a lot more articulation and touch sensitivity. The Cleans were also amazing and it sounded like a REALLY good old silverface twin. Sadly was sold to keep us afloat after I got sideways with a political group that tried to destroy me and my family. Gave as good as I got as I survived and many of them DID NOT!! Still hurts that i had to sell some of the stuff I did to survive but roof and food mean more than GEAR!
2-Old Lee Jackson modded Plexie once owned by Damon Johnson of Brother Cane that was at a local shop. Just a tonal MONSTER!!
3-The 2 series B Hot Rod Mod Carvin X amps I have owned. Both running EL34's and from 1991 a 100 watt and now own a 50 just a wicked hot rodded Marshall type tonal monster but with really good cleans and a pedal friendly effects loop.
4- One particular 100 watt Marshall JCM 900 SLX halfstack. Was at a pawn shop and have kicked myself for years for not buying it. Played a number of those amps but that particular one for some reason was just WICKED!!
5- Fender Vibro King more of Bruce Zinkys black magic and the absolute best clean amp i have ever played.

It was THIS amp used in this clip in the studio that I had a shot at that was owned by Damon.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

here is the heart of the 5E3...the greatest amp I know of:

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Are you building that?

I’ve been wanting to try my hand at a build for a little while now.
Most people recommend a 5E3 for a first build.

Yep...build these pretty regularly...kinda go back an forth between the 5E3 and a 5F1-KT66...
I would say start with a standard 5F1 build...get familiar with how it works...voltages and signal flow...if you know the underlying electronics putting it all together is much easier...

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

I have played a friend’s 69 Marshall before and it was pretty impressive.

The best amp I own, though, is somewhere between my Soldano Hot Rod 25 and my new Decatone. The decatone has a true clean channel that the HR25 does not, but the HR25 is much closer to the sound of an SLO at more manageable levels.

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

Re: Greatest amp you’ve ever played

best one ive played is an old-ass tweed fender deluxe.

i dont really stick to one genre, but i guess my overlying play style is pretty.. funky

with that said, i also like just about every single-ended/ class A amp demo on youtube, and particularly love listening to johan segeborn play a supro black magick.

o, and this weird amp i used to have called a "dumbo" or something... the model was an overdrive special... sounded good, but this guy offered me 1500 bucks for it and i was strapped for cash.
