Greenback in my Classic 30. Oh Yeah!!

What a great sound this speaker delivers. I started out with the stock speaker then tried an Eminance Legend V12 but there was something about the way the high end was coming across that did'nt grab me. Put the Greenback in my amp and wow, what a differance. Not a lot of bass but just the right amount it seems. But what I'm really liking is how much definition comes across on the high end, something that seemed to be a bit of a problem with the other speakers. Very detailed. I'm in the process of making a 1-12 closed back cabinet to house it in because a lot of people here said a Greenback seems to sound best in that application.
Just out of curiousity, does anyone know if Eric Clapton and EVH were using Greenbacks in their Marshalls? All of a sudden when I play a Van Halen song the tone now sounds more Marshall-like. That's a nice plus!

Celestion Greenbacks are wonderful speakers. They get overlooked a little because there are other Celestions that some like even better, but if you compare a Greenback to all the 12" speakers out there, the Greenback will be superior to 95% of them. Congrats! Lew

I do think EVH used Greenbacks but I wouldn't swear to it and yeah they are the bomb!

Yeah, Wattage, you seem to have discovered on the tone guru's choice there: Classic 30 + Greenback spkr ... my friend has this setup with a Carvin Custom Shop guitar, and I was very impressed with the sound; my frame of reference is totally askew, tho, since "all" I have is a full stack. (Not one combo amp yet!!)

The Classic 30 is the ONLY Peavey amp I have any respect for at the moment, tho I'm eagerly awaiting the Lynch model, which is supposed to be based off of a Plexi; we shall see, tho, we shall see.

Re: Greenback in my Classic 30. Oh Yeah!!

I really want to try some greenbacks, but I can't really justify switching out my vintage 30s. Besides, I have no money.

Good choice. I like Vin 30's, Greenbacks, and Jensen P12R's the best, but have
always wanted to try the Celestion Alnico Blues. They're priced outta the stratosphere, tho.

Clapton definitely used Greenbacks during the Cream era, but that was only part of the reason for his sound.

I could'nt agree with you more. But like I mentioned I'm amazed how some of that tonal "vibe" came across.

Just curiousity... how do the Greenbacks and Vintage 30 compare? I've heard they are similar... but different if that makes sense.

I think Vintage 30s have a mid spike where the Greenbacks do not. So they probably have a middier more aggressive sound, as opposed to a smoother Greenback sound?

This is just a guess from clips of Greenbacks and playing Vintage 30s.

Absolutely. I can also get some pretty close sounds out of my '61 SG/LP reissue. Clapton's hands are the missing piece of the puzzle, I think.

Re: Greenback in my Classic 30. Oh Yeah!!

V30's have a louder, cleaner tone than Greenbacks. Greenbacks have those chunky mids that sound like a big knife cutting through a head of lettuce...with a little honk mixed in.

Neither has as much bass as some other Celestions, like the G12H30 for example.

I actually prefer the G12H30 in most combo amps as the Greenback and V30 have less bass than the G12H30...tho all you need to do is boost the bass a little to make up for it.

Of the three, I prefer the G12H30, then the V30, then the Greenback...but they're all great speakers.

To me, the G12H30 has the best qualities of both the Greenback and V30...and a fuller tone than either.
