I played one once for a short time. It played pretty nice and it sounded awesome. I played it with the vox night train and I was getting good classic rock tones out of it.

Only one I've played enough to make a judgement is my friend's Corvette (through a valvetronix). Great guitar stock, I really liked it (though not crazy about the body shape). His was the trans red finish.

I played a G5120 in a store last week. It was a really, really excellent guitar, and definitely nails that Gretsch tone and vibe. It had that distinctive bark that the Gretsch hollows have. No setup or playability issues to speak of either. I was really impressed.

They tend to be pretty spartan with plank bodies. They are easy to play, they have some nice finish options and they have the characteristic Gretsch electronics at an affordable price. If you wanted something with a little bit of the Gretsch mystique without the big price tag they're worth it. However I am never completely happy with a bolt on neck version of a set neck original.

They're amazing for someone like me. I can do jazz, blues and rock n' roll on those puppies. And some of them have nice working Bigsby's.

You must be referring to the solid bodies. All the hollows have set necks.

If all the big-ticket Gretschs are already made in Japan, where are the Electromatics made? China? Just curious.

edit- i can't find any hollowbodies with a bolt on neck

They're some of the coolest chinese guitars out there.

I don't have an acoustic guitar...don't really want a traditional dreadnaught or anything so i've been looking for a good cheap hollowbody that i can take with me anywhere and strum it acoustically or plug in and rock out. Workin at Sam Ash i get to see lots of cheap $600ish guitars come and go and tried lots of Epiphones, Ibanez, and Gretsches...

The Gretsches are some of the coolest and i'll probably end up with a 5120 in orange...some of them have had weird finish / QC issues...we had a black on that came out of the box with the paint flecking off around the F-hole...it was funny cuz once enough paint fell off you could see that it used to be an orange one...so i figure they're taking the bad / ugly orange ones and re-spraying them black...hahaha

The stock pickups in 'em aren't the best but they do the gretsch thing for ya. They're the same size as normal buckers so you can do Phat Cats or 59's or EMGs or whatever you dig...just like any other $600 Chinese guitar, you can't expect too much from 'em, but they're cool for what they do.

My guess would be that the current Electromatic series China.

For anyone who wants the Filter'Tron sound without the Gretsch ergonomics, I recommend the Fender La Cabronita Telecaster. This design with a Bigsby vibrato would be the dog's danglies.

My 5120 I bought 3 months ago was made in Korea.

TONS of bang for the buck. I do feel like the "gretsch-buckers" are ok, but they don't give you the real 'Tron feel/sound.
