Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

Whelp, better late than never. Finally got around to posting some Splawnage. I've been super busy, but finally got around to spending some decent time with the new amp. Today I cranked it up loud for the 2nd time since owning it. I was chugging along in 3rd gear, grinning ear to ear this thing sounds so damn good. I suck - but this amp frigging kills. For a short while I had the most incredible tone coming out that I've ever heard come from me - I was happy.

Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself.

A little background. I got the Splawn Competition ($1350 brand new). It's a 50-watt single channel. Features include the 3 gears with 2 overdrive options (usable in each gear). The "Gears" are best summed up as 1st Gear = Hot Rod Plexi, 2nd Gear = Hot Rod 800, and 3rd Gear = Super Hot Rod 800. The amp has a half-power switch to get down to 25 watts, a bypassable effects loop, solo bost - all accessible via footswitch. EL34s.

For speakage I got an Avatar 4x12 loaded with Hellatone 60s and 30s X-Pattern (aged V30s and G12H30s)

Previous to this amp I have been playing a Line 6 Flextone II for 6 years now. In truth, I really like the Line 6 product. It took some tweaking, but I've received nothing but compliments from other guitar players for the Metal tone I get out of it. I decided that at 40, well dammit I've earned a big rig even though I don't really need it.

So enter the Competition. All I can say is frigging "WOW". I had a tad of buyer's remorse at first, thinking "WTH am I going to do with all this amp?" (Just ask Ben) Well, after cranking it up a couple of times all that has gone away. Quite simply, you cannot get a bad tone out of it - I double dog dare ya! In 1st gear even a hack like myself can be coaxing some VH-esque tones - Panama is right there at your beckon call. I'm not an LA style player at all, but even I could "ease the seat back" in 1st gear. 2nd Gear to me is Priest, Maiden, all that fun stuff - but with an extra kick. 3rd Gear to me is Lynch, the real high-gain stuff. It is really a sweet gear, I almost feel like I'm cheating in 3rd gear it sounds so good. Lately I've been dialing back the gain and throwing the Tubescreamer in front just for a different flavor. It pushes it in a different way which I like for lead sounds. It's not as dynamic, it's more compressed, but the sustain is great with that little pedal. Mediocre players like myself sound good with this, and great players should sound incredible.

Playing through the Jackson is all good and fun - but this thing seems to really like Les Pauls. My Paulie sounded from another planet with this thing - like it was screaming from inside it's very soul.

As for the cab - I'm very happy with it. I think it sounds real smooth. I played loud for two hours today. You know sometimes you hear cabs and it's like a pick in your head - no such thing with this cab. Sounds great (to me at least).

The fit and finish are just outstanding. I took a bunch of photos of the guts. However, I heard through the grapevine that Scott gets a little touchy with people posting photos of the innards, so I decided to honor that and not post any photos. I must say, however, the attention to detail is outstanding. The tubes are real... and they're spectacular. In addition, the folks at Splawn know how to do customer service. Could you imagine calling up Marshall and asking to talk to Jim? Well, you can with Splawn. They are Johnny on the spot answering E-mails, and will always take your call. I asked some pretty noobie questions, and they treated me like a pro.

Before I bought this I was hesitant with the price. Then I took a stroll through the GC (read: 7th circle of hell). When I saw 1850 for a Rectifier, 2 grand for a used Jubilee, 2500 for a Soldano, and 1300 or something for a JCM800 reissue, I got over that. At 1350, with a lifetime warranty, this is actually a great bang for the buck as well as being a great amp. If you can live without the clean channel, this things is great.

As for it being 50 watts. Well, let's just say there are probably few people who need more than 50. 50 is quite plenty for someone like me (too much actually).

Anyway, enjoy the pics.

The last pick is my 2nd son: Jackson with his signature guitar. You think I'm kidding.

Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

Congrats. That's just a beautiful looking amp, and you should never feel guilty about treating yourself to something you worked for. I have no doubts that the LP sounds stellar with those glowing bottles of joy.

So, when's the wife getting home, or is she gone for good? hahahaha

Thanks Joe, LOL!!

Actually, my wife has been very understanding through this whole mid-life crisis. It could've been a Corvette!! :laugh2:

Next time you're in town, you're welcome to take it for a test drive.

BTW, I have you to thank for helping me get my tone. You once posted some Marshall settings. I took those and ran with them. They helped me to nail "my" tone on my Line 6 and I use them on the Splawn also: Bass 5:00, Mids about 4:00, Treble about 3:00.

Good stuff!

Re: Grinning Ear to Ear (Splawn Content)

So, I've had a few drinks tonight - I'm feeling the love.

Just wanted to give a shout out to a few folks who've helped me along the way.

Joe - Like I just said.

Ben (Twilight) - Ben has fielded probably no fewer than a 100 questions over the last few years. He has endured about 3 hours worth of phone calls (I probably almost got him fired), and had to listen to me change my mind about a dozen times. And we've never even met. He said, "Buy a Splawn - you won't be sorry" or something to that effect. It's all his fault. Now Ben, if you go and jump ship with an Engl or something, I'm gonna be pissed.

Jeff H - Some great advice on speakers and the like. Definitely real and down-to-earth. Someone who seems alot like myself in his stage of life.

Shreder75 - a great source of Splawn info.

I'm gonna read this tomorrow and kick myself for gushing, but, it's the Makers Mark and Coke talking (Coca Cola I mean). But, after today's jam session I'm really in a state of nirvana (and I don't mean Teen Spirit).

cool man, awesome gear. I hope to have a midlife crisis as good as yours one day :)

Wow, that amp looks ... wow. Almost as cool as mine! ;)

I can't wait to hear some clips of the Compy. The fact that you can play it @ 25W in triode has me thinking I may pick one up for at-home use, as well as for recording solos, and use the Quickrod for gigs. (I have two guitar projects to finish up first)

Your kid is adorable, too! He looks like he has that outlaw's twinkle in his eye; I like that! :)

Don't worry about the calls ... it's really nothing. My boss is needy, but one of those all bark/no bite type of guys.

Dude, that rig is 100% studio/tour worthy. 2 great guitars with a great rig to play em through!! \m/

Not a bad way to go I say. My ears (non-pro of course) don't detect any tonal difference betwn 50 and 25 watts.

I forgot to mention, one of the non-features I suppose that I really like is the sparseness of controls. What, 8 total knobs or something like that. You spend very little time tweaking and much more time playing - and wherever you set them they work fine. I spent some time in the Bennie-dime-it-all zone. I liked that real well also - in-your-face sort of brash tone. With everything dimed it has alot of clarity - you can hear every note of even a heavily driven chord - minors, minor 7ths, major 7ths - that sort of thing.

Your kid is adorable, too! He looks like he has that outlaw's twinkle in his eye; I like that! :)

You have a good eye. I have two children. One you can hear all the time - He's the Nigel Tufnel Marshall of children - he's on 11 all the time. Jackson (in the photo) is the sneaky/wily one. When it's quiet for too long you can bet that he's into something. I have to keep the Compy unplugged, because he likes to turn things on and dime everything when nobody's looking - makes for a nasty surprise if you're not prepared.

Congrats, that amp looks totally bad ass!!!

GAS is slowly building for a Splawn and at some point, I may sell some bits and pieces and import one from the states. One question - does the Competition clean up in 1st gear with the OD off? The Quickrod is probably more for me as I need a clean channel, but I like the simplistic approach of the Comp and TBH, I prefer 50w amps.

Hi Richie, the OD is always on is my understanding. When the light's off, it is in OD1, when it's on it is in OD2. Two flavors of overdrive.

The only way to get sparkly cleans is to turn the gain waaay down.

I would say that if a clean channel is important, then the Quickrod is more your cup of tea. The Quickrod has a half power switch - 100W/50W.

Hope that helps.

Interesting. I tried the quick rod on it's 50w setting and it didn't sound that great compared to it's 100w setting.

Those Splawns are superb amps. Enjoy.
