For soldering a maximum of 4 wires per pickup they charge:
70 bucks

RIP-OFF

I was down there last week and asked for fun and was blown away.
I honestly hope no one has ever paid that much for a simple job

OMG! Everybody here has to do their own PU changes. If you're not sure, we'll teach you. That's money best put on PU's, not labor.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

If you think about it, $70 is not an unreasonable amount to charge for a pickup change. But it is crazy to pay that much for something you can do yourself.

It absolutely is, 70 dollars is way to high for a simple soldering job that requires little to no skill. But they know that people who are scared of destroying something in the guitar that cant be fixed. Its the same reason im astonished when people go to a shop for a restring.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

These people have the skill set, the tools, and the space to run such a service.

*****ing about how expensive Guitar Center is, is kind of going on a Justin Bieber youtube video and telling the internet how much you like/dislike him. You had the choice not to go to the page in the first place, yet you wasted the time doing so.

For all of Guitar Center's flaws, they are subject to many of the rules of any major outlet and it would behoove you to take advantage of it.

Example:
1. I want a Coffin Case for my guitar
2. I see there is a Valentine's day promotion. $20 off purchases over $99
3. I go to store and use said promotion.
4. While I'm there I see a guitar I want on guitarcenter.com for $300 listed at $250. It's not in the color I want.
5. I ask them to order me the color I want but to match the price in the store.
6. Guitar is mandated by law to match lowest advertised price even if it's their own.
7. Rep orders me guitar for $250.

you should hang out in front of the GC with a big sign:

Pickup replacement: $25 for one pickup, $40 for two or more!
2 day turnaround time!

You'll make bank.

Ive often been tempted to do something along the lines of that, even better i could say follow me to my house and you'll have it today

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

You forgot you're paying for them to assume liability for screwing anything up.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

I'll hook you up for $50 - you pay shipping.

Until the inevitable "whoops" on some thrash metal guy's guitar. Now you've got property damage, insurance and possible "personal safety" or legal issues.

Awesome! I'll bring every guitar I and my friends own. You'll work all day for that $40.

Save the labor money for **** you can't do in ten minutes with $15 worth of tools.

I don't think it's unreasonable at all. Fortunately most of us figured how to do it so we save the money.

I agree. I guess somebody doesn't think his time is worth very much.

It's more than just soldering 4 little wires (and it's actually 5 so the OP just failed to do the job correctly himself) and it absolutely takes skill to solder "correctly". If not done correctly, the solder joint will be cold and then eventually break leaving the pickup not working. If not done correctly, too much heat can be applied frying a pot or switch. If not done correctly the iron could be left unattended without being in a proper stand which could lead to it falling on something that it would melt or worse, catch on fire.

There's also liability insurance for working on other people's guitars (IOW, not their property), the bench fee, in addition to the labor for the tech do to the work (removing strings, remove pickup, put new pickup in, make sure it works, restring, tune). It'll take more than 10 minutes, especially if there's any need to add in a toggle switch or swap a pot out for a push/pull.

Sure, we (meaning those of us who know how to solder correctly) may be able to do it in 10 minutes but that assumes just slacking the strings enough to pull the pickup or pickguard out and putting it back in like changing a tire for a NASCAR driver. In reality, it's not like that because of the first item mentioned in the last paragraph.

Anybody who thinks soldering takes no skill, stay away from my guitars, or anyone else's for that matter.

Agreed.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

Okay… eleven minutes.

$70 isn't unreasonable at all, especially if doing it yourself would mean buying tools you don't have and soldering for the first time in your life. Pay someone else to do it, and spend that half a day or whatever playing guitar or just enjoying time with people you love.

I was just being snarky because I slept all weekend and just woke up tonight in time to go to bed.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

It's not horribly out of line for that service. I am not saying that most people should pay that rather than doing it themselves, just that it really isn't a rip off IMO. I visit a guitar guy rarely, but the guy I go to would charge $68 for installing one to three pickups, according to his Website.

Nearly everyone can change a set of brake pads with a little training, but does that mean a mechanic shouldn't charge a profitable price for the convenience of doing it for you?

(Great guitar tech, BTW, for L.A. folks.)

when I bought my 1st Duncan in the mid-80s, the cost of the pup came with a free install. then I learned how to do it myself and never looked back. but $70 is ridiculous for something that should take less than 30 minutes.... maybe for some special wiring setup, but not for a simple swap.
