guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

Im replacing my stock pups on my 2012 Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro for Seymour Duncan slash humbuckers, honestly this epi just needs pup upgrades and a better toogle switch every thing else is pretty sweet, very close to its big brother from Gibson.

Most 12-year olds can change out PU's. It's low-skill, low-tech. It's much harder to learn how to use a cell phone.

I think LP Traditionals may have Switchcraft toggles. Is it shorting out?

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

OMG! Everybody here has to do their own PU changes. If you're not sure, we'll teach you. That's money best put on PU's, not labor.

I did a p/u swap once by myself . . . and never looked back.

Now i do all mine, and my brother's and a few lazy friends too.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

Its not diff changing pickups. But I can understand someone who is not comfy with a soldering Iron. It is better to get it done by someone who knows how to the job properly rather than do a shoddy job . On another forum I came across a self proclaimed guitar tech, who advised a kid to use a Soldering Gun to install his Bare Knuckles pickups.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

My best friend is the "tech" at a GC here in Michigan, and he only charges $40 so maybe it's a store by store basis. But for something you can easily learn to do yourself, paying anything is a little silly.

Ditto, mate. Now I've just started to wind my own pickups too. I've done one and have got another one planned when the wire gets delivered - this one will be far more tricky.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

It absolutely is, 70 dollars is way to high for a simple soldering job that requires little to no skill. But they know that people who are scared of destroying something in the guitar that cant be fixed. Its the same reason im astonished when people go to a shop for a restring.

Depends on the guitar. This isn't an unrealistic hourly billable rate, and I know from experience that on a Strat, soldering the leads is the least of the time needed; all the stuff you have to do just to get the pickguard off the body, and then back on, is the majority of the time needed for the job. On a rear-rout, yes, replacing a pickup is very easy and relatively fast; someone who knows what they're doing could probably get the job done in a half hour.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

I''m gonna say this at the risk of starting a flame war.. there are 3 reasons for letting a real PRO (not some tech at GC) install your pickups..

1. some of us don't have the time/tools/knowledge to do a high qaulity jb on the first time out.
2. the tools cost more than the labor. by the time I buy a decent solder iron and solder I spent more than 60 bucks.
3. I've seen TONS of guys who like all of you "say" they can do it themselves..
but they're solder work looked like a dirt daubers, and more than 5 of them had long term intermittant issues and they just "lived with it"
and they often had burned up pots and scorched wires inside the guitar..

Pro musicans have ZERO time for that crap. They have to be on the job, on time, KNOW the songs, AND have fully functional and roadworthy gear.

So you'll just have to excuse me if I take it with a grain of salt when "some guy on the internet" says "anyone can change their own pickups"... sure they "can" but at what quality level?

I'll take mine to a local 40 year veteran Luthier who does Exceptional work, and charges me 25 per pickup any day. (Except strats he charges 35 for a strat, no matter how many pickups need to be changed.)

Please don't bother trying to defend yours positions becasue truth is I don't care if your the best pickup changer in the world Your not local to me so its irrelevant to me and my needs.
I simpl do what is best for me and my job as a musician.
if you can change pickups on your guitars awesome have a blast. but its not fair to say that Pro luthiers are ripping you off. thats an overstatement, and its what I took exception to in this thread..

This is hilarious, you bump a long dead thread to post this? What were you searching for to find this thread? Apparently you didnt really read the thread since NO ONE in this thread said pro luthiers were ripping anyone one off.

Most of whats in your post is pure drivel. I get it you are too lazy and unwilling to learn a new skill. Thats fine its your life but dont come here attacking a straw man that no one made.

I will make this comment though, All pro muscians i know, do know something about their gear and can swap pots and pups and make repairs. You have to know your gear and you dont always have the opportunity to take your gear to a tech and wait for them to do it. Insinuating that you are SO PRO that you cant be bothered with teching your own guitar speaks volumes.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

A quality full pickups replacement plus re-setup is probably a 1 hour book rated job (not how long it takes him actually)

so 70/hr for a professional (assuming he's full time professional) is not unreasonable -although you should be able to find it for 50.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

The one in Kennesaw, Georgia does garbage work too. They soldered my buddy’s APH-2 set to the wrong tone lug and, I joked, lost money because they used $80 worth of solder.

I had to fix it for him. I would never, ever, ever let them touch one of my guitars.

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

GOOD NEWS!!!!!Guitar Center special deal....25% off certain strings (don't know if it's the E1 B2 G3 D4 A5 or E6) when you let them set up your guitar...what a steal???

Re: guess how much guitar center charges for pickup replacements?

Electrified, the one-post-wonder, says that he doesn't..."have the time/tools/knowledge to do a high qaulity jb".

Well it's obvious that he doesn't have the knowledge, but the soldering skills can easily be learned.
He doesn't have the tools, but basic soldering tools can be purchased for as little as $30...about half what it would cost to hire a tech to do it.
He doesn't have the time?!! This one really gets me. To do it yourself takes less that 30 minutes. To take your guitar to a tech, wait for him to do the work, then pick it up could take a week.

Picture eggs frying in a pan..."here's your brain on drugs" (or "electrified" to the point of no hope of repair).
