Ahhhhh well I had made that thread simply to post info I picked up randomly more as a conversation starter and possible research topic for people. Turns out the pain is real.

c'mon 2014 blowout! Turns out I really love the 120th anniversary fret marker after all!

Re: Guess the Gibson price changes weren't a joke. Check this mess out

Man, am I glad I only play Teles. I need a bumper sticker that says, "My Les Paul is a Schecter PT".

Re: Guess the Gibson price changes weren't a joke. Check this mess out

Often when there's a Gibson LP versus Epiphone LP debate, it's as though it's only fair game to compare hardware for hardware, wood for wood, while price differences are off the table, because whether a component makes an audible difference is one thing, but what a person is willing to pay for is especially subjective. But with these price increases, it will be harder to ignore the elephant in the room, which is the idea that someone would argue for those benefits in exchange for that much coin, is insanity. Gibson guitars might come to symbolize poor financial discipline or conspicuous consumption more than it represents serious musicianship.

For someone living in their car buying a Squire is poor financial discipline. If you can't afford them or don't like them don't buy them. I love my Gibson's and will continue to buy the brand.

Just a shame they have this new direction , makes no sense to me but I really can't say anything until I put my hands on one and give it a test drive. Do the design your own on the Fender site and it comes up to 2k and will require around $1k in upgrades with a neck and ebony board that they don't offer. Pretty much the way I see it guitars are freaking expensive and this certainly isn't worth getting bent out of shape over. Anything good is going to cost a lot of money nowadays and I have done pretty well at upgrading Epis and Squires and those were not remotely cheap to get the quality I was after.

I like this part "More robust cables change from 28 awg to 26 awg for improved signal" One who cares.... 2 even then 26 is thicker than 28

To me the guys running around here who own 6 or 7 epis with fleets of bugeras symbolize poor financial discipline much more than those who own Gibsons. The whole industry relies on conspicuous consumption the insanity is how hard they try to make you think you "need" all this crap and the latest and greatest whatever.

For the price I hope the quality is improved at least.

Well don't rush out too fast, these will be in the clearance bin before you know it. :D

Re: Guess the Gibson price changes weren't a joke. Check this mess out

I wanna know who was banging down their door demanding that zero fret. Why is something like that on a "Standard" les paul?

Fender's got it right if you ask me. The Am. Std. doesn't stray too far from tradition while giving you a few very useful improvements like a 9.5" radius, a no load bridge tone control, and a 2pt trem. The Deluxe has more of the newfangled tech.

Oh well. Gibson can do what they want I guess. Plenty of used LP Traditionals to scoop up should I want one down the line.

Re: Guess the Gibson price changes weren't a joke. Check this mess out

Am I reading this right...all that $$$$ and no locking tuners? Is this a joke?

As long as there are people willing to buy a turd with Gibson name on it prices will continue to go up.

If you need some quick cash it's better to be able to sell a couple of guitars rather than the only one you have.

Good financial planning discipline would state you have a rainy day account to use in that spot instead of hocking a bunch of low end guitars. Using cheap guitars in this manner is a extremely poor investment choice

Re: Guess the Gibson price changes weren't a joke. Check this mess out

Empty specs changes and exorbitant price increases. Nothing substantive about materials or craftsmanship changes, which amount to pretty much everything that's important about a guitar. Considering how poorly made and overpriced they were before these changes, I can't imagine this move doing them any good. All it will do is push your common musician away from the mediocre new Gibsons and toward the well made, value-priced used Gibsons even more than was already happening. To me, this seems to be nothing but them nonsensically grasping at straws, because they must not be doing too well. It's like an auto dealer saying, "Well, we're sucking at selling mediocre Dodges for the prices of Acuras. So let's slap some shiny accessories on them and put them out for Mercedes prices instead."

I'd be all for it if I had any hope that they would actually start building amazing guitars again. But that does not appear to be the case. It's the same ill-treated suckers making them from the same materials, with a few specs changes here and there. For those prices, you need truly good craftspeople who get treated well making the guitars out of excellent materials. If you want to change yourself into an elite brand, you have to have an elite product, not just stick an elite price on the same old mediocre crap you were churning out before.

I remember in a local shop a Les Paul Standard that I was in love with, circa 1994-1995. It had been sitting there for a couple of years, so it was a very early '90's model. It was very well made, made of "actual" Honduran mahogany with a beautiful wine red finish, and it played like butter. It cost $1,200. I went into that same shop in about '00 or '01 when I was home on leave from the Navy. The store had JUST sold the guitar for $900 out the door in a going out of business blowout sale. It sat there on the wall of a very large and well respected music shop for CLOSE TO TEN YEARS, with no one willing to pay the very fair price of $1,200 for it. That is hilarious to me now. 20 years later, with a general inflation factor applied, Gibson are expecting people to pay twice as much for a guitar that is made about half as well. Meanwhile, vastly superior playing value aside, that early '90's wine red Standard is worth more than its original price, and going up.
