• Creation of the "Modern-Vintage" boutique guitar niche market

Jol's guitar designs have won six Editor's Pick awards in a row from Guitar Player magazine.

Jol has designed guitars for: John Lennon, George Harrison, Sting, Keith Richards, Gary Moore, Billy Gibbons, Rick Nielsen, Keb Mo, KK Downing, Glenn Tipton, Lyle Workman, Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson, Martin Barre, Johnny Ramone, Elliot Easton, Brad Gillis, Roy Buchannan, Jeff Watson, James Honeyman-Scott, and many, many more.

"While in his early twenties, Dantzig was a professional touring musician who had lived in England and the West Indies. After attending the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, Dantzig set up one of the country's first shops selling 'vintage' instruments to collectors and rock's top musicians .

In 1973 Dantzig was a founding partner of the Hamer Guitars, the first 'boutique' guitar company. Hamer was concieved as a professional alternative to vintage instruments, a new and unique concept at the time.

By the mid eighties Hamer had solidified its reputation as a high- quality, professional guitar maker in the US. No other small company could boast of an artist roster as deep and diverse as Hamer's. All four Beatles, three of the Rolling Stones and every member of the Pretenders, Def Leppard, The Police (including the drummers!) owned Hamer instruments.

In 1988 Hamer was acquired by Kaman Music in order to expand distribution and develop the company's long term strategy.

After five years with Kaman Music, Dantzig relocated to northern California in 1993 to start the Dantzig Design Group, a design and concept development firm that operates like an artist's cooperative. He also served as a consultant to Kaman and a host of other music industry companies solidifing his status as a guitar guru.

In 1997, Dantzig was retained by Kaman to engineer Hamer's move to New Hartford in order to consolidate operations with their other Music companies. Dantzig's task included the logistics of moving and the design of a new workspace. Hamer's new shop is more artist's loft than factory. Nestled in a lush valley, 200 feet from the Farmington river, Dantzig and his team are now building the best Hamer instruments ever.

This transition is a return to the very philosophy that first launched Dantzig and Hamer into the worldwide spotlight.

'We're doing exactly what we do best,' Dantzig states. 'Demanding excellence within, and delivering character throughout.'"

Thank you Jol Dantzig and thank you Seymour Duncan team --- I never thought I would have the opportunity to ask questions to Jol Dantzig directly --- I'm quite excited!

I am EXTREMELY excited to read this and sad all at once. I get every Tuesday off. :banghead:

On to the good parts as the owner of 24.5 Hamers this WILL BE cool to read coming home from work after it's over. I'm lucky to own since December 1982 Hamer Standard #0189. It is one number after James Honeyman-Scotts and 3 numbers before one formerly owned by Dez Dickerson of The Mighty Prince's band WAY back in the day. Mine? It was owned by Dave Hlubek and is a sweetie! I found it in a Jacksonville pawn shop. :eyecrazy:

Life IS Good Indeed. :headbang:

Tell me Jol, if you will, about meeting with Dave back then and maybe you might even remember putting 0189 in his hands. It is said to be an October 1979 guitar if that helps any.

My favorite Hamer moment has to be at the Hamer Open House about 5 years ago and you putting a Korina Standard Neck in the neck pocket of it's soon to be attached body and shaking it. LOVE the fit! :approve:

I met Jol, though I doubt he remembers me, at a Hamer workshop in Little Rock and was very impressed by his attitude as well as his products. I can't wait.

Get this. Jol just called me and said, “I've got an idea for the forum. At the end of my appearance on Wednesday, a randomly selected participant will win a cool prize. I'll pay to pick up their guitar and bring it to my workshop where I'll do a full soup-to-nuts setup on it. I'll intonate it. Adjust the truss rod. Dress the frets. Clean and lubricate it. It’ll play like a dream when I'm done with it. And the lucky winner can follow the day-to-day progress on my blog.”

When I heard this, I was totally psyched. And I said, “Maybe Seymour can consult on a set of pickups.” “Sure,” Jol said. “I’ll play it and see where I think the current pickups are lacking and Seymour and I will pick a set for the winner and I'll drop them in.”

So there you have it. Any electric guitar or bass set-up personally by Jol Dantzig. Pickup selection by Seymour. All documented for the world to see on Jol's blog.

Now, the fine print. The guitar can’t be a total basket case. It has to be a reasonably playable solid body or semi-hollow electric or electric bass. Also, to qualify for free pickups, it has to use standard production model pickups like Gibson-size humbuckers or Fender-size single coils. And finally, because Jol is generously picking up the shipping costs both ways, this offer is limited to guitars with shipping addresses in the Continental USA only.

Still, you gotta admit. This is amazingly cool. Innit?

That's awesome.

Now, Evan, here's where my problem arises. Hypothetically speaking, if I'm chosen will I be allowed to pass on the work to a forum participant of my choice? I own no electrics, so it would serve me no good.
