guilty blues junior pleasures.

Went into one of the local music stores with the intent of seeing how a stock blues junior will react with my tele (+ants) and my pedals.
LOVED it. It sounded great, it was definitely loud enough! I was thinking of getting the Tweed for an extra few hundred, but i found i liked the stock enough.
I PUT A DEPOSIT ON IT
Just wanna know what mods have you guys done to it. I'm interested in a few BillM mods, i.e. Presence control, TwinStack and Tone Stack and the Bias Mod.

Just interested in what tubes and speakers you guys have in your BJr's.
I just want a really nice clean with decent head room. Not really looking into more volume in terms of speakers. Volume isn't an issue. I just really want nice sparkling fender cleans. I know it's not a 'true' fender, but the BillM mods seem to bring it closer.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

All the clips on the BillM page sound like crap - I wish somebody would make different clips for that site!

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

the only mod I would do would be the presence mod. mine is completely stock. I may call up eurotubes and get their "clean headroom" set for this amp but I don't need tubes yet.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

a new speaker can make a huge difference in volume and tone

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

I've been using one for about a couple of months now I modded mine right away, For mods I did some of the BillM mods such as Tone stack, cooler bias, power supply stiffening mod and I replaced all the tubes with JJ tubes from eurotubes.com and one of the best changes I made was to Install a Celestion G12H30 it works great with my Barber pedals.

I can get very nice tones out of this amp now I'm actually prefering it over my 59 Bassman RI plus I find that 15 watts is plenty loud and the smaller package is easier on the back!

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

I've got JJ tubes (ECC82-12AU7 in the 1st and 3rd preamp spots)
and a Jensen P12N (nb) Speaker (I LOVE this speaker in my Blues Jr!)

Good stuff, Blues Jr's Rock!!

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

the p12n is a very cool speaker. why the 12au7 in p3? you want no power tube break up?

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

I've always heard good things about this amp. One day I'm going to have to splurge and get me one. :)

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

Hellatone 30 and JJ's across the board. Great improvement to me. The G12H is a big sounding, thick speaker that is great driven with either of my teles or strat. I'd love to try a P12N in there though- for a more Fendery tone.

You could keep the current tubes as they will run about 50-60 bucks, and use that savings for the speaker. The speaker will change the tone much more than the tubes.

An eminence Texas Heat is another speaker to consider, and that's pretty inexpensive.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

I'm getting one as soon as I get settled in at my new place / new job ---

can't wait for "Baby's First Tube Amp"

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

I took one in trade awhile ago and decided to mess it up...went to a tweed-era tone stack, dropped the B+ a little, used some assorted ANOS tubes, and put an old blackframe Jensen P12Q in it---sounds pretty good now for recording, although I don't think I'd use it live. They really should have used a bigger cab...

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

JJ power tubes & pres, with an NOS in V1; Jensen C12N RI.

I leave the FAT engaged, with the Master up and the volume around 4-5.
Sounds great!
I'd suggest changing the tubes and speaker before considering any mods.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

that's the one .... it was about $55-$60 here when I got mine -- it's not an expensive speaker

now, I will say that some think it's bright in the B Jr ... that's because there have been a few revisions to the board, some to deal with reverb issues I believe.
Mine is fairly smooth with the C12N though, but remember that this amp has a full tone stack, master volume, plus the FAT switch, so anyone should be able to find a good tone for their playing.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

There's a guy at work who moved up from a BJ to a green, special-edition Blues Deluxe. Bad move, but he won't listen to me.... although he's in his 40's, he's only been playing a few years, and still thinks "bigger is better".

I could get his BJ for a decent price, and probably should just because it seems like a good amp to have and a fun mod platform. But I'm already have a 2xEL84 amp, so I'm getting a SF VibroChamp instead - I figure it's more Fenderish than the BJ.

He seems to just be sitting on the BJ, so maybe a few month down the road, I'll talk him out of it.

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

What other speakers are good, so far on my list is the
Jensen C12N.

What about greenbacks?

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

people have used all kinds of speakers in these things

first, decide if you want to go for a British or American tone, then go from there

yes, folks have used Greenbacks, V30s, G12H30s

another candidate is the Weber Blue Dog

Re: guilty blues junior pleasures.

The Eminence Canabis Rex sounds good in the BJ but when I use my pedals I didnt care for the way the Cannabis Rex sounds a little to dark and round The G12H30 adds some nice mids with tight bass!

I was considering the C12N for my Blues Jr. and I'm VERY HAPPY that I decided to go with the P12N instead.... just somethin to keep in mind.

Rock on ~ kac
