Guitar Cable

Re: Guitar Cable

You should take up Gearjoneser on his offer.

At least then, this thread would be worth something.

If he sells you a Spectraflex cable for $10 bucks - that is an awesome deal.

But it will not solve your tone problem.

Re: Guitar Cable

Now I'm confused.

Do you want dirt & mud? If so, amp distortion or distortion pedal.

Do you want to tame high's? If so, tone knob, amp EQ.

Not happy with the guitar's tone? Too bright or too muddy? Not enuff output? If so, pick up swap.

Guitar and amp sounds fine, but want to "shape" it more or fine tune (boost/cut) certain frequencies? If so, EQ pedal.

Seriously dude, a cable is not where its at. You'd be wasting more time and money. At least if a pedal, amp, guitar, pick up, etc didn't work out you could re-sell it and get most of your money back.

Re: Guitar Cable

You mostly want a cable with a higher capacitance. It'll be darker, more buttery, warmer...

Lower capacitace is for more highs. I use Planet waves Custom Pro cables and they're low capacitance. DiMarzio's Standard cables are low capacitance, too. Stay away from these.

Re: Guitar Cable

You should look Bruce Brisson up and see if he wants to get back into making guitar cables:

Re: Guitar Cable

Okay, I recall hearing that once... but for example, I know some people say Monsters cable are kinda dark sounding too, but some others say they sound clean... and some say cables don't do that much.....

I've done blind listening tests with a variety of cables. There is naff-all difference.

But I had a microphone preamp, and I connected it with the cable that came with my guitar... the difference was night and day

A mic preamp is not a guitar.

Re: Guitar Cable

This is a very strange thread.

The OP seems to be on the right path to sound heaven, with a clear view of priorities and wouldn't ever ignore technical realities.

Sounds is only in your head, right?

boingboing; said:
Okay... it's a Ibanez through a very clean DI Amp.

Well, I'd like to play with the tone of some metal bands, not to necessarily play metal
Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this combination of statements?

Re: Guitar Cable

I've found, at least with my stuff, that the MONSTER ROCK cable seems to muffle the high end a bit- it's a $50 cable, but it's lifetime guarenteed, and it will roll off the high end of most guitars I've tried it with.
The MONSTER BASS cable and the MOGOMI gold and PLANET WAVE sounded clearer to my ears.

Re: Guitar Cable

No - I'm sorry, this is a bad idea.

You can change your tone with really bad cables, but the effect would likely be inconsistent, & the cable unreliable..
- You should be able to get the same effect by rolling off your volume and tone controls just a bit. That's how a cheap cable does it; resistance & capacitance.. if you don't like the sound with the knobs turned back, you won't be happy with a "muddy" cable either.

If you are playing through some kind of ultra clean preamp there could be several other things bugging you...
Is it made for guitar? It could be that you are ALREADY having an impedance mismatch & and it's making your signal sound thin..

Also, even if you're not looking for a "distortion" sound, it should be noted that most great clean sounds are made through an amp or other signal path that introduce some non-linearities or small amounts of "distortion."

Maybe you could use an overdrive pedal, set pretty clean? &/or an amp simulator pedal, &/or a compressor...

Playing an electric guitar through a crystalline clear mic-pre directly into a computer probably wouldn't sound good to most folks.

So dirty it up just a smidge, roll off a little treble, get some compression/sustain.. enjoy.

Hope this helps.. :)

Re: Guitar Cable

P.S. If you are already playing through an amp or something, & your guitar sounds too bright, but you never like the sound with the tone control rolled back a bit, you can change it; basic capacitors are incredibly cheap.

What don't you like about it? Is it way too dark at any setting other than off? (A common complaint) - use a smaller value cap.
Does it do too little? use a bigger value cap.
