Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

Any experience with the bodies and necks sold at guitar fetish? Decent quality? Fretwork ok? or need alot of attention?? Id like to build a V on the cheap..

Any other info or input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

Bloodrose, not even the most expensive necks from Warmoth come with fretwork done.

That's a job for the person assembling/setting-the-instrument-up. Don't expect to just tight up some screws and have a ready-to-play instrument. Don't even expect all pieces going well together.

HTH,

Re: Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

Really? I figured warmoth stuff would be ready to go.. costs enuff.. was mocking up a neck from them and was at close to what Ive paid for many of my guitars..

Re: Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

Fellow here in town got a canary wood neck from warmoth
And while they seemed level
The fret ends were beveled but still squared off
Not rounded

It was playable just a bit scratchy

Nothing a few minutes with a file wouldn't cure
But nonetheless

Are you looking at their older stuff or the XGP stuff?

Re: Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

Hahahaha! I was just looking at their stuff the other day with the same idea but not sure I'm going to pull the trigger on one of their kits. Looking at other options. I've got almost all the hardware I need.

Re: Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

Exactly what Kojak said, when you buy a neck, it is fretted and the basic fretwork is done, but it still needs final leveling, crowning, maybe some end shaping, and polishing.

That said, I built a tele from XGP parts for kicks and it was decent quality, straight and played fine after the mandatory fretwork. Next time I build a guitar it will be Warmoth or better though.

Re: Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

I got one of their paulownia Tele bodies a few years ago. For $50 I can't complain. It turned out to be a decent guitar and fit with a Classic Vibe Squier neck just fine

Re: Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

I've been using a lot of GFS necks in builds for the past few years. I only buy the unfinished ones with the large paddle headstock so I can do all of the shaping and finishing myself. Their XGP line are really good...very little work needed.

Just for kicks several months ago I ordered a couple of their regular cheapy necks that were on sale for a ridiculously low price, I figured if they were really bad I would have to do a lot of work on them, but that was ok. One of them was really very decent and only needed some work on the fret ends. The other was very bad!! The neck was warped like a propeller and the frets weren't seated completely. It was so cheap, I was ready to just use it for firewood and forget about it, but what the heck, I called GFS about it. They immediately emailed me a prepaid return label and sent me a replacement neck. This replacement was the most beautiful neck I've ever seen at any price. Straight as an arrow, perfectly symmetrical grain in the maple neck, and the maple fretboard was made of amazingly gorgeous curly maple that had been sanded smooth as glass. The frets were also next to perfect only requiring slight end filing and sanding (but I do this anyway on every neck I buy and every guitar that I buy regardless of cost...yes even $2000+ Gibsons). I think the only guitars I've bought that I didn't need to do any fret touch-up work on were a Fender American Strat and a Schecter C1 (my #1 guitar). Both are about 10 years old now.

Bottom line...In my experience, if the GFS XGP necks aren't the best you can get, the service is.

Re: Guitar Fetish bodies/necks??

IMO over the past few years, the quality of GuitarFetish gear has gotten increasingly better. Not a total endorsement but my past few purchases have been great, not good. Thier VEH pickups are amazing.

I'm planning on doing a Tele build with XGP stuff, along with getting a bolt-on LP neck for my current build from GFS. Money's always tight with me, so i can't afford the Warmoth stuff, but I've been pretty pleased with everything I've gotten from GFS so far. Will probably pull the trigger when the ol' tax refund comes in. I can let you know how it goes if you like.

Please do! I don't care about any of the issues the guy in that video talks about with the bodies, but I am VERY curious about their necks, particularly LP style necks.
