Guitar forums: pros and cons

This is my favourite guitar related forum. But I also go to other ones occassionally. I was thinking of why I liked SDUGF best, and what I liked about other forums. Here's my pro/con list:

SDUGF:

Pros: Most helpful advice, very knowledgeable members, (generally) friendly tone, best humour, even love the weirder members, best off-topic discussions

Cons: Not enough traffic...can be too long a wait for new posts/threats (my ADD is probably the real issue)


TGP

Pros: Lots of traffic, new threads, weird and unique instrument porn, not tied to a specific product or company (I would hate to say anything against a Duncan product in Seymour's house...he seems like such a nice guy)

Cons: Too many gear snobs, though not the majority; trolls aplenty; less than helpful advice (Q: "I'm thinking about a $500 asian beater for a back up and a cheap modelling amp for hotel travel. Any suggestions?" A: "An R9 and a Dr. Z")


MyLesPaul

Pros: Generally nice posters, good subcategories (limits the Norlin vs. Reissue fights a la TGP), guys who know a lot of stuff and will give advice

Cons: some extreme anal tendencies ("My new LP has a pin sized dent in the finish on the back. My life is over!") and quickness to criticize ("did you try the search engine before you posted?")


What other sites do you folks like/dislike and why?

I agree with your assessment of here.. especially the cons having OCD, and all

TDPRI - pretty much the same as here just a Telecentric focus

HC (Elec guitar / Guitar Jam):

Pros: more traffic, a lot of good people / regulars. Can be very entertaining and a place to get / share ideas
Cons: a few too many not-so-nice people. GJ can be clicquey

I see them this way:

Electronics: SDUGF

Building / Setup: TDPRI

Gearjonesing: TGP

SDUGF is my home because...it's home, but I know what questions are for TDPRI and what to use TGP for (buying and selling :laughing.

talkbass is also good.

TGP isn't very good for actually discussing things. Interesting threads suffer from people participating who are just not talking about the same thing (too different background), and there are some loud experts who have extended some good knowledge by knowledge that they just made up in assumptions and now can't tell which one is which.

Which TDPRI had a normal sales forum. Wait, maybe I don't, actually.

I like MLP for discussions about old made in Japan gear. For some reason they sometimes attract crazy sellers.

This is the only gear forum I spend time on, so I can't really comment on others. The low traffic thing gets to me sometimes too, but I think it's actually a blessing. If you come here at all, you're pretty much a regular. We get to know each other a lot more because there isn't a huge amount of us, and I think that the forum is a lot better for that.

Plus, if there were more threads here, what's left of my free time would totally disappear.

What hunter said. The Les PAul forum is like the ultimate LEs Paul CD Rom. Anything you could EVER want to know. But use it as a search engine.

I go to the Dean forum a lot. Great guys. Obviously a lot of guitar fanboism. But a very cool and hip group of dudes. Very metal leaning IMO...

I might have read a few of them and might have made one or two accounts here and there but my total post count on all of them combined prolly doesn't go over 20 or so, this place feels like home, it's inviting, accepting of newcomers but also homey-like, I feel like I know a lot of the guys here and that helps me put each of their posts in context which also helps greatly to understand when they say sth where they are coming from.

I just like it here

I tend to split my lurking between here and the TDPRI . Both are great sites. Just depends on what you need to know. The pros of both are you can find a lot of knowledgable people who are willing to give advice guidance. The cons of both are you can find a lot of unknowledgable people willing to give advice and guidance.

I have a couple accounts on different forums but I have maybe 10 posts in all on the 3 that I can think of... this forum is my only regular one.

Pros:

Amazing guitar pron, extreme wood fetish pictures, the ''big guys'' really know what they are talking about, lots of artists/endorsees on that forum, kind of a free speech forum (but the mods really know how to use the ban hammer), the humor over there is the funniest I know, have found lots of new bands from there

Cons:

Djentdjentdjent, did I say djent?, but will it djent? can it djent? DJENT. People can be a bit snobby if you ask about mixes and stuff. Also: ''use the effin' search function!'' almost in every thread.

This is the only forum that I post on. Even though I play ESP, their forum page is just horrible. I tried it and after a few weeks, I asked to have my account deleted .
They're nothing but mostly teenagers on there who have no respect for anybody and the moderator allows profanity to be used on there.

The Acoustic Guitar Forum is very good.

The Larrivee Forum is also very good and has some of the friendliest, most helpful folks around posting on it. They sure love their Larrivee guitars tho and don't have much to say about electric guitars.

I feel a nice connection with the SDUGF, but I'd also like to find a guitar forum with less emphasis on metal, distortion pedals, guns, knives and hot chicks. :fingersx:

Guess that goes with the predominant gender and age group here which seems to be mostly young white dudes. :laugh2:

I love electric guitar and rock & roll but have just as much interest in blues, r&b, gospel, jazz, roots and acoustic music.
