This is kind of amusing, in a way...

I sold this guitar to a guy on Craigslist, about two months ago. Happened to be browsing today, and well looky here! I owned and cherished that guitar for several years, until hand surgery turned its neck profile against me. Bought it in TERRIBLE condition used at a local GC, but when I picked it up, I knew it had potential. Replaced every bit of hardware, took out the EMGs and installed Duncans; 59 w/A4 mag in the neck, and Distortion in the bridge. It was really a nice guitar, especially for what I paid for it. Call it, a "Labor of Love". ;D

Anyway, after I sold it, the guy texted me back a few times, raving about how much he liked it, and I was glad it went to a happy home. So I was surprised to see it come up for sale again, so soon. What really bothers me, though, is that I think this guy is misrepresenting this guitar.

From what I could learn when I owned it, it is a 2003 Jackson SLSMG, made in Japan. The serial number is 031247, stamped into the neck at the 24th fret. He is claiming it to be a 1990, "Very mint, first year" Jackson Soloist. And it is in pretty good condition, but certainly not "mint." He is also claiming that it has stainless steel frets! I think that when I had it professionally fret-levelled a few years back, the luthier would've mentioned that, don't you think? 🤔

It almost makes me want to get a hold of this guy and call BS on his shady sale ad. But it also poses the larger question: if you were a potential buyer, how would you verify any of a seller's claims? It IS still a nice guitar, but I can't stand liars. Buyer beware!

Lots of shade on CL these days. Buyers should always confirm everything for themselves.

Yea,,, i wish i knew more about Jackson's production history. Did they even -make- a Soloist (hardtail or not), in 1990?

Re: Guitar I sold is back on C.L. !

They did because I remember stalking one with a lightening-bolt paint-job right about 90 or 91.
They had also just started the MIJ professional series, which is what the lightening-bolt was IIRC

You should contact him and say you are a product specialist for Jackson/Fender and that the guitar was reported as stolen in 1992, and your next move is to contact the Feds

If the current owner did post a picture with the serial number, you could use that information too, and I'll send you my address for him to send the guitar to.

LOL! Well i'll leave that to you guys, the ammunition is certainly available! ;D

Interesting to know, thanks!

That guitar actually looks interesting. It’s a string though body, I wonder how it holds tuning, how thick the neck is in comparison to my explorer.

The neck is pretty thin, i think it's like 17mm at the nut and 19mm at the 12th fret, 12"-16" compound radius. Maybe 43mm nut width (?).

I had installed Grover locking tuners. It held tuning ~OK~ and was normally tuned to E flat, with GHS hybrid 10-52's. The thing is, yea you can tell it's definitely neck-through, but no telling if it's a once-piece or multi-piece neck, under that finish. Last time i had it to the guitar tech for a set-up, he said it was starting to twist, just a little bit. It still played alright, but he said if it started getting worse he could fret-level in only certain areas to compensate. The bridge is a locking Tone-Pros.

The thing i do miss on that guitar, is the lightweight, slim (almost Ibanez "S"-like) body. A person could definitely do worse for $500!

(Caveat: if that's the same case he's offering, it's a flimsy busted-up piece of junk. I had only used it to transport for the meet-up and then let it go with the guitar.)

Re: Guitar I sold is back on C.L. !

AstroZombie, just FYI, those neck dimensions are just off the top of my head. I will say, i once owned an Ibanez RGA-121, and the neck on that was definitely thinner (and flatter on the back of the neck, too, less "C" shaped) than the Jackson. So that's a way to compare, if it helps.

That's one thing, at least with Ibanez you can look up a guitar on their website, and it will give you neck dimensions and even a radius diagram. I wish more makers did the same!

Looks like the Jackson has a slightly more traditional neck carve than Ibanez. That sounds nice; I think Ibanez necks are mostly too thin.

Hey hey now! Um, yea i agree but let's not speak -too- fondly of this guitar, ya might start giving me a case of "seller's remorse" ! :P

Re: Guitar I sold is back on C.L. !

Awhile back I noticed that one of my exes was back on the market, and I thought... Whoa! Wait a minute, that was a woman. Fuggedaboudit!

Re: Guitar I sold is back on C.L. !

I don't see why you'd care about a thing you sold and don't own anymore. Either buy it back from the dude or let him do what he wants with it.

It's just totally random that i'd come to find out that it -was- up for resale, so, no i don't care. Other than the fact that as the previous owner, i'm the ONLY person who'd know that the guy was a little shady with his ad. That's all. (The "seller's remorse" comment was a JOKE, sorry if my attempt at humor didn't work for ya!)

So, as i have learned here, the year of origin, although questionable, COULD be what he says it is. The stated year by the seller as a 1990 model did not come from me, so i'm not sure how that was determined. So that leaves the "stainless steel frets" claim as the only verifiable misstatement. And i guess in the scheme of things on Craigslist, that pretty much pales in comparison to the many true scam ads one can find on any given day.

Sorry, i did not want this thread to get all sideways. It was kind of for entertainment; and as always with Craigslist, just the usual caution of "buyer beware". Carry on!

Re: Guitar I sold is back on C.L. !

Hey, IF it's the same guitar, you may have saved somebody here the remorse of being had. Its not that much money, why does the guy have to lie? Thanks for the heads up
