Guitar Kits?

I am seriously thinking about putting a guitar together (with the help of my guitar tech for wiring and set up) from a kit for the first time. I want a small hollow body or small semi-H. I like the size of the Gibson 339 and more so the PRS Hollowbody II. I found this at BYOG:

http://www.byoguitar.com/Guitars/Electric-Guitar-Kit--Carved-Top-Semi-Hollow__BYO-CT-SH2.aspx

It looks a little like Trey Anastasio's Languedocs.

Have any of you had any dealings with BYOG?

Are there any other quality suppliers on kits such as this one?

Re: Guitar Kits?

Rockler now sells several guitar kits. No idea what they are like though.

Hmmm...that doesn't sound great. What is bad about these kits? I am only concerned with the body and neck actually. The rest I will buy separately most likely.

No i guess it depends on who you get them from. The ones i can get locally are great! The fret ends are a bit sharp but other than that it's good enough to make a great player. I just hope my mate likes it once it's done.

Re: Guitar Kits?

I just got done working on a kit guitar for a friend. I had to gut the electronics they were all garbage. One of the pots spun and the pickups are now my refrigerator magnets. The hardware was also subpar. I would suggest looking on Ebay for a project guitar and starting off there.

Re: Guitar Kits?

If you are looking at a kit guitar check out guitarkitworld.com They've got a lot of tutorials as well. Personally I wouldn't do a sunburst like they recommend but they seem to have some good information otherwise.

Re: Guitar Kits?

I haven't looked at those kits but I did build a SG Jr. from Precision Guitar Kits. Really good quality wood, very snug neck to body joint, impressive fret work. I couldn't be happier with the way it came out. I did the finishing, wiring, mounting the hardware and gluing the neck and body together.

Re: Guitar Kits?

Warmoth, Carvin (do they still make kits??) - yes
Partscasters/superstrats from quality brandname pts or japanese knockoff components - yes
Old japs rebuilt to modern metal specs (anodized guards, actives, mb new blk hardware) - yes!
...
Dodgy chinese $125 kits - no

....tech to do wiring? Wiring is the easy part. Everything else is far more tricky.
