I mean if you have a

les paul custom (w/ duncans) running into a crate gx-212..
vs
epiphone junior (100 dollar cheap guitar) running into a marshall stack

whats going to sound better.. what i'm trying to get at is what should i buy first.. i mean i have decent.. well beginner equipment now i'm ready to upgrade. first buy a kick ass amp.. or reeeeaaaalllllyyy cool guitar ..right now i have the gx-212 and that pos junior.. god i hate that guitar but i do have my dads old maraduar so i mean ... i can live

I'd get the Guitar first, then load the Duncan's in it, and audition amps with it. That way, you get a better feel for an amps sound with the Guitar your going to be playing for a long, long time. :)

Guitar first, and by the way, I have a Crate GX212 that I use for my practise amp and I love it. Do what 59Paul said, then get a amp, with the Crate your allready at a good starting point.

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

It depends what kind of gigs you're doing now or are going to have in the near future. You have to decide whether the amp you have will cover these needs, and if it doesn't it provides a more immediate need that needs to be taken care of sooner. If your crate is OK, then go for the guitar, I know it's hard to resist a gibby. But if it's not, go for the stack.

I would personally rather have a great stack with a crappy guitar than a great guitar with an inadequate amp (with the crappy guitar, I would also change the pickups and have a good tech set it up). The first setup is good for doing gigs, the latter is good for little more than home practice.

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

I'd put my money into a good amp and get a decent $500ish guitar. Most moderately priced guitars have good necks and frets. Throw some decent pups in and your good to go. Cheap amps generally suck. :) I'm not full on tube snob, but not much sounds better than the real deal. YMMV

Guitar first. My advice is: regardless of how much you spend on a guitar, first and foremost, be sure it feels like "home". Don't even plug it in if it does'nt feel right. This is why I won't buy a Les Paul. It's a great, great guitar but I can't play one to save my life. Just does'nt feel fight.

Take your guitar and try some of the amps that you might want to buy and if you think it sounds good then get the amp and then start the savings on a guitar. However if it was me I would go for a good guitar - make sure that it feels right, does what you want it to do and be very picky about the guitar , pups, neck, construction and does it sound right when played unplugged.

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

I would ratter have a great amp and a cheap guitar. The Amp is where most of your tone comes from.

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

amp first. a great guitar will sound ****ty through a ****ty amp, but a decent guitar will sound good through a good amp.

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

that's a tough question.......depends on how many amps you wanna own...some guitars sound better with certain amps for different sounds...if it were me...i'd get the guitar first though....then find a very versatile amp...!?

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

must get a good amp first...you could change your guitar some time later but since then you'll have a good tone with your amp and when you get a good guitar later you'll get the best sound of it...otherwise if you get a good guitar with a crappy amp your guitar would be sorry for a long time:)

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

Amp all the way. even with duncans in a guitar, you will see a WORLD of differnece running a guitar through a great amp. there are a lot of things that go into the tone of your rig but i think a good vlaue of it is in the amp.

IMO, people playing les paul customs through crate amps should get a head check. thats not way to treat a gibby. :nono:

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

I think the cheap guitar into a Marshall stack will sound better than a good guitar into a cheap Crate. But I'd still get a good guitar first because the playability will be better and no one likes to look in the mirror and see themselves playing a turd. Lew

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

I'd say go for the amp first, thats exactly what i done and im so glad i did, i put duncans into my strat copy and it sounds sooooo good....now saving for an ltd delux ec 1000...yummie!!

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

of course...if you are patient and try really hard you can get both... :27: :scratchch ;)

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

if u have the $ to get a marshal 1/2 and a 100 guitar, thats about what, just shy of 1500? regardless

get a good tube combo (possibly used)
and get a good workingmans guitar (possibly used)

moderation is key. a 4-600 guitar w/ duncans and a 4-600 amp would sound the best, anda it could do anythinig from gigs to home practice

actually IMO i think moderation is the worst of the possibilities, because if you want to get say a marshall half stack and a gibby dont settle for less, unless your not to pushed about getting either , but if you are choose one of em then save for the other, otherwise your only gonna end up selling both and in the long run its probobly gonna take you longer and cost more to get what you actually wanted... Just my Opinion tho but id say alot wud relate to that too...?

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

its better to get somethin that will hold its value if you can..........the true and tested: fender, gibson, marshall, hiwatts, mesa boogie, etc...... i would say get a real nice amp, and fit some duncans on whatever ya got, the tone will be pretty sweet, even if the guitar is only so so for the moment

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

Personally, no matter what others say.
I would get a guitar first.

Because Personally, I hate lugging around an amp. Places I gig always have 2 or 3 spare amps lying around (keyboard amps, acoustic amps, guitar amps, anything with a speaker in it) and I hook my v-amp2 in, and that amp automatically becomes my tone machine with a few turns of the EQ knobs...
So - I would get a guitar first because no matter what - i can have the tone I am trying to achieve (with the amp) in the little blue guitarshaped box.

Ontop of that - I believe guitars contribute much more to the signal chain than amps - but thats just me.
My schools guitar (monterey mst-1) into the marshall valvestate at school = whining little b!tch tone screaming treble-heavy crap.
My epi into the marshall valvestate at school = average tone.
My epi into my v-amp2 into the marshall valvestate at school = MY tone.

Advice:
Get Great Guitar.
and if you aren't a tube snob (like I am, strangely (but thats another story) ) grab a v-amp2 or a PodXT.

Because guess what - I can save up for guitars and not amps now!
2 funds become one. Except when I have some surplus and the tube snob inside takes over and gets its Mesa/Boogie.

Re: Guitar or amp? what to sink more money in

Im debating this too, i basically decide don getting a new amp perhaps maybe a mesa boogie single recto or adls 50 head with a 2 x 12 cabinet, the gibson ca come later on when i have ALOT of cash
