I can certainly make it work, but the goodness of a boost pedal is just too damn useful to ingnore for me. Not only do you have the amp alone or amp plus boost, but both sound different when you roll back the guitar volume, so there's four tonal variations already. Depending on which amp I use, I might use a TS type, some other OD type, or a compressor (low comp and release, boosted level).

I always plugged straight into the amp. The only pedal that spent any time in front of the amp was a wha wha and just long enough for the song it was needed for if it was that night's set list. It was not true by-pass and I didn't like what it did to the tone even when not switched on. I tried to use overdrive pedals every once and awhile but never did like them. For decades my main gigging amp has been a Marshall Jubilee 25/50 watt.

i do it all the time. various guitars into a few amps all 20w or less.

this weekend its custom guitar with wlh set into a deluxe reverb

I go back and forth with it but prefer to have an OD out front. If I have to, I can go without. My main gigging amp is a Vox Valvetronix AD50VT. It's got plenty of drive available in the models and presets plus manual mode. Even when I use my big Marshall MkIII head I keep it simple and usually just have a delay/echo in the loop that sits on top of the head and go either straight in or have an OD out front. I always have my tuner pedal when gigging.

Sure, with my Mesa Roadster (4 channels) and Les Paul (coil splits). I have more tonal options than most people that gig with pedal boards.

I find that to really understand your amp and how to eq it, you have to play it straight in for a while to see what its really capable of, and what its strengths and weaknesses are.
