Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

I'm married and I keep six guitars, three amps and two cabs plus a mic and support gear in my living room.

Bloodrose isn't wearing the pants.

OMG!! And Im at work too!!!

Sadly, I gave up the keys to the kingdom many years ago. Was young and stupid and thought that if you put 110% into the relationship, you'll get 110 back.. No, lucky to get 10% back.. If I could have a do over.....

for you guys with understanding wives, go home hug em and say thanks.. Alot of it is that my wife is extremely ocd. If something is out of place.... back when we owned a house, she got to the point where I had a half stack in the house and a guitar (in case) beside it. And, she has spoken recently that when my last daughter moves out, we can make her room a music room.. so there is hope..

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

Nice of her to give you permission :/

You worked 3 jobs while she went to college? That means your gear goes in the house. (S)He who has the gold does not make the rules. Would she have had the college without you working 3 jobs? She didn't contribute for 4 years? Your gear goes in the house, and she will simply have to drop the OCD act.

Get wall hangers and put your axes on the wall. You're a musician, and other people are merely accessories.

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

I would sell my guitars before putting them in storage. You're spending money to keep them from being played.

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

Havent visited them yet. Im going to soon. Then Im going to have to get the money ahead to pay the current, lease the new one and rent a truck to move the stuff. (its not just gear in there)

Hopefully you can find one close by at less money bro, sucks having them so far away!

Trey, I hear you! And as much as I love having lots of guits, envy you a bit.. I KNOW im not much of a player and at my age and the way my life is, prolly wont be. so wish I could just cut down.. The hard part is, when I sold a bunch before, I sold all the "trophy" axes and stuff. Like my Washburn Wm526. Awesome guitar, but wasnt playing it and keeping it mostly cuz it was rare and special. So I got rid of all those. All of them I have now, I WOULD play regularly if I gigged or had them all in a music room, and Ive asked myself a million times, if I could have only one, which would I choose? Id be satisfied with any of them. Obviously Id like to keep my 1 accoustic, Id like to keep the strat, and if possible a superstrat and a LP type. But deciding which ones between them.....

Well, I know several guys on the forum who, accurately, say that they've never or hardly ever sold a guitar. They are right, if you don't sell them then you don't have any regrets. For me, I do miss my Gibsons (AJ, J45, 2 Les Pauls) but all of them had something that was just not right...if that makes any sense. For acoustics I found that I love an Ebony board and currently have an Eastman version of the HD28. I'm got my Strat down almost the way I want it (the bridge pickup may need to be switched but everything else is perfect.) While I have some projects in the works, I have my sound now that works for me. And, what works for me is not for everyone (I did narrow down during a time I wasn't playing anywhere...helped me with the decision making.)

I really hope that you can find something closer, and cheaper.

I was serious about the loft idea. For what you pay for storage for a month or two you could put together a loft and keep everything with you. Then you know it'll be climate controlled.

That is a great idea really! Gives me something to think about for myself–my apartment is small and half of my living room is filled with guitar stuff.

That's why I'm glad I live alone. I can keep my guitars in my living room and nobody says a word lol.

+1 to this! :headbang:

I don't get why ppl say you should store guitars with the strings slackened? The guitar doesn't know if its being played or not, and the guitar(s) you do play regularly, you're going to store with the strings at pitch. A neck can warp if its not kept up to tension, or only kept partly at tension for too long

I've heard from so many guitar builders and techs that you should do this on guitars if you don't plan on playing them for a while. The string tension can be hard on the neck especially when it is just sitting without any maintenance and setup.

You'd only need to slack the strings if you believe the guitar would suffer from exposure to some extreme temps. Metal and wood freeze at different rates, so having the string slack would prevent them pulling more on the neck when contracting - at least that's what I'm given to understand. I try to avoid allowing my instruments to get exposed like that for any duration, so I haven't had to test out the theory.

I've heard its because tight string tension is not good for a stored neck..FWIW, that came from a guy who worked at the Fender Custom Shop.

I don't see the point of having full tension on a guitar that is not going to be played for months–I've not had a (knock on wood) neck bow on me yet ;)

Re: Guitar storage/commercial storage units??

I'm married and I keep two in the living room, four in our bedroom, on my side of a king-sized bed.

The world isn't a matter of guitars vs. wives, guys. Seriously. It's possible to have both.

P.S. You should see my basement. No, on second thought, you shouldn't. Never mind.

Cool that you have an understanding spousal unit. Give her a hug and tell her you appreciate her..
