Guitar strings dilemma...

Re: Guitar strings dilemma...

Really do wish the string-brands would all do their own tension calculators, since there's different core/wrap-ratios, core-shapes, and wrap-materials.
There seems to be quite some variation between different calculators.

Feel is the deciding factor for me though.
I like them to feel very close to balanced, but that means the plains will show far less tension on the calculator.
Plains don't need as much static-tension to feel tight,,,,,as they're essentially about like an unwrapped core wire.
Wounds can have a higher static-tension and still be very stretchable.

Re: Guitar strings dilemma...

Why not just use a regular 10-13-17-32-42-52 set? It isn't hugely different from what you're using now and a lot easier to find.

If he's used to that 28-38 and went up to 32-42 that would be a huge feel difference,,,,at least on those strings.

Re: Guitar strings dilemma...

Like several others, I'm a reformed custom string set user. D'Addario XL 10-46 is fine for all my solid bodies. 12-52 on the 175, 13-56 on acoustic, and 11.5-41 on the mandolin.

I do use a custom 10,11,13,20,10 set on my banjo, because Bela Fleck and a handful of other guys no one here knows use those gauges.

Re: Guitar strings dilemma...

I thought 9s were pretty light, 10s fairly standard, or have I missed something :dunce:
