Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

Anything with the overdone squealing trebly distortion. I prefer warmer tones.

I agree on Morse. I love his playing, but his tone is kinda thin.

Same with Satch. Great player, but...

Vinnie Moore's second album was MUCH better IMHO. Especially the slower tempo songs (e.g., As Time Slips By).

+1 on the scooped mids.

I'm with beandip on SRV. I liked the In Step album--tunes, tones and all. He might have been more adventurous when he was stoned, but I found it to be more sloppy as well.

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

I would have to say I hate bassless, treble heavy metal distortion.......blech. Sounds like someone rattling a tin can that has rocks, ball bearings and metal shrapnel in it. Totally uncool. I like soulful organic and thick tube distorion. Ohhhhh yeah!
Edit woa Lesstrat that is wierd, we have the same tastes. I didn't even see your post either. It was there when I was finished. Nice to know some agrees though.

I'm the other way round (unless we're talking VERY early SRV). I love the first two albums/el mocambo tone, and dislike the multi-amp stuff on 'in step'.

Yeah, early early stuff. I've got some great "bootlegs" that I picked up in Austin awhile back. Back when he was in the Cobras and The Triple Threat Revue, and went by Little Stevie Vaughan.

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

Stuff with lots of chorus added to it and
Oldschool 80s synthesiser guitar sounds.

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

Someone educate me here!

I only have two SRV albums - Texas Flood and Live Alive.

Whilst I appreciate Stevie's awesome playing on both of these, I find the tone doesn't come close to the best I've heard by my Strat idols - Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher.

What track(s) are the epitome of the SRV tone?

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

Fender amps. People love them but, They have not ever jived with me.

Yeah, the only early stuff I have is a couple of tracks off 'in the beginning'. His tone is a little bright on those.

Just listened to the carnegie hall version of 'voodoo chile'. I am dumbfounded by the beauty and ferocity of that man's sound.

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

can i get flamed here, .........

Most things by Hendrix. The only excuse I'm giving him is that during that time, EVERYONE was new to good distortion tones, him, Clapton, Page, Beck....etc. So maybe he was experimenting or something.

Boze.

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

I dislike most of claptons strat tone, but I absolutely love jimis tone on manic depression

I'll focus on players I like. Everyone knows CC Deville and Kirk Hammet's tones suck.

Early Randy Rhoads. Obviously feeling his way into the tone thing.

Joe Satriani. Something's wrong if every cheesy pedalboard out there has a preset that sounds almost identical to your tone.

Most Eric Clapton after blind faith. maybe not bad tone, but nothing like he had.

John Petrucci. Yes, you sound EXACTLY like you run a bunch of mesas into a rack.

All agreed :bigok:

Eric Clapton's blues tone with the JTM45 never seizes to amaze me, don't know what he did after a few albums.

+1 (generally speaking--there are some exceptions).

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

i cant stand that metal or even rock sounds when the treble is all the way up. its like, put some damn bass in it!

also, i cant stand the sound of satriani, petrucci, via, etc. its all sounds waaay to overproduced and like the tone is sucked dry because of all the effects, basically because it is.

also, might surpise some people, but i cant stand neil young's electric sound.

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

Anything by Korn or Slipknot.

I like the music (not all the time, but generally), but theit guitar tones are aboiut the thinnest I´ve heard (or my ears suck:D:D)

But everyone else seemingly wants exactly that tone

Live Alive was probably one of his worst albums ever. Nearly everthing on that album is studio but the audience, cause he was so throwed that night, that everything was crap. Check out In Step, SRV: The Real Deal, and SRV: Greatest Hits are IMO the best one's he's dont. His tones on "Family Style" with his brother are more stratish than SRV-ish, since they both played Jimmie's oly white strat on the entire album, but you can tell who's playing when.

Thanks beandip. :)

Re: Guitar Tones You Don't Like, But Others Do

A small list:
Jimi Hendrix: screech city. I know he had primitive gear by today's standards. his live sound was even more so..ever hear the Winterland CD? Ewww!

Randy Rhodes: see Jimi. The triple tracked bridge pickup chorus thing gets old after 1/2 a song.

Any song on 'alternative rock' radio: with bands all getting the exact same guitar sound (like in the mid 80s) it gets very boring to listen to.

SRV: one of the most copied sounds, it gets old after everyone else has copied it..come up with something new?
