Guitarists: Stop hurting the audience at small gigs

Re: Guitarists: Stop hurting the audience at small gigs

We've got it good. Our drummer has an electronic kit. Any time we play at festivals, the sound guys smile in approval. It makes their job so much easier. Plug in and go. The other benefit is we can keep the overall FOH and stage volume at a comfortable level. We usually start out with the level low, but not too low, and gradually bring it up through the night.

My worry with that set up is that some hard-to-find cord on an electric drum kit will short out, and you'll be on stage without a drummer.

It's all standard 1/4" instrument cables. Nothing that we don't have a spare of. The only technical issue we had with it was the sub in his amp that he had behind him went out. In the place we were playing, we didn't run the drums through the PA but after some troubleshooting on where the low boom went, we just plugged him in to the PA and continued on. And this is in 9-10 years of us being together.

A quiet, inventive drummer would be a dream to play with.

I lean towards energetic ones, that don't stay in the background. I like bands where the drummer makes a real contribution to the songs, besides just keeping time.

That's where the inventive part comes in for me. A good drummer, whether quite or not, should be able to make a contribution to the song aside from just keeping the beat. Unfortunately drummers like that seem to be the exception. I've only played with a two or three drummers like that.

When people can't talk and hear each other, and waitresses can't hear to take orders. That's too loud.

That sounds like a dance club to me and it is always crowded witch chicks and guys who want to get luck... wait that sounds like groupies and rock star wannabes at the gig too! Now I am lost.

Being serious, take with you a nice cab sim box and feed the PA with that and use your amp master control to get to hear your self on stage without ruining the FOH mix.

Not really any different than the drummer's kick pedal coming detached from the drum, or the pedal's spring breaking (both of which I've seen happen). Or sometimes the hi-hat rod comes apart inside the shaft. Point is, there's plenty that can go wrong either way.

As long as the waitresses and the bartenders can communicate with, not necessarily hear, the customers, it's not too loud.

Re: Guitarists: Stop hurting the audience at small gigs

A decade or so ago a guy tried to steal my guitar after a show. He just grabbed the case and started running. I threw my Cry Baby at him and - BANG - he collapsed and dropped the case. Then he wake up in a hurry started running and collapsed again a couple of times like a drunk horse. I think he was hurt. I did not care.

I stopped doing that. There is no Cry Baby on my FX board anymore. I'm a good guy now.

Laugh all you want. The bar owners love us because of it. Patrons can talk to one another, waitresses can take orders and hear customers without having to try and read lips. It's nice being able to control the overall volume of everything. The kids sounds great too. He just got a new one so I'm curious what he's got dialed in with it.

:D
