Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

All the gits in my shop are on wall hangers, but those few special ladies next to my bed are in cases. Two are pushing 60.
As a long term thing does it really matter?

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

I tried to envision where the weight of the guitar rests in the case. Use that as you may. I store mine vertically for the most part.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

Mine stand up against the closet wall for the most part. Would think that cases are designed to be flat as if you were opening them. Neck would have more support etc. I always take a little tension off the strings if I am going to leave one in the case for long and a humidifier is a really good idea too , fretboards will dry and fret ends become painful.I installed a humidifier in my house system and try and keep it above 50%. I have seen many that say don't leave on stands/hangers but I can't see the issues there either ? I have pulled guitars out of cases that were in them for 20 years and it can be ugly , if tension is left on , the neck can pull way up.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

Provided the guitar fits the case I couldn't imagine that there's much difference either way . . .

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

Usually horizontal, but no scientific reason why. They stack better right now that way.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

I stand mine vertically, but that's more for access so I can pull any one of them out when I need.

My only concern with stacking them flat would be if the weight of several on top would press the bottom case down on the guitar inside, putting extra pressure on whatever was in contact with the case; e.g. pressing down on the bridge or tailpiece, or pressing the neck flat or something.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

By the way, the flat cases are on shelving, only two high on each shelf.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

guys are there any adverse affects (especially necks) to guitars being hung on wall hangers all the time when they are not played. i make sure that the strings are partially slacked on those that are not played for extended periods of time, and also make sure that the fret-boards remain properly hydrated.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

I've been keeping them flat only out of laziness. The Martin and the ES get played almost every day. I keep them at 72 deg. and 46% humidity. They seem fine.
I do loosen the ones on the hangers that rarely get a workout.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

I meant also that most of mine are vertical on end. Most of my cases are rectangle and they "stand".

One other thing I do is I have a few of the 5 shelf metal shelving units you can get at Home Depot and such and rather than stack them to make it 5 shelves high, I have them so they are shorter with the top shelf being where the guitar cases are. That is leaving 1-2 shelves under for storing things. I can get 7 cases on each at a 3.5 ft off the floor level leaving plenty of space at the top to the ceiling. I have one side of a room with these and have 5 pieces holding 35 cases. The shelves are just case wide. It will hold LP and V cases but not as well as rectangle cases.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

also worth a mention is that most set-neck guitars have some sort of back angle on the neck relative to the body, with the headstock having further angle at the nut. so if u rest them flat, without proper support underneath, some portion of the weight of the guitar will be applied to the neck laterally, through the headstock (the heel end of the body ends up making no contact with the flat surface). this might not play well with modern thin necks possibly aiding neck warp.

A lot of good advice ^^^. I will add one thing, based on bitter recent experience. Please do not rely on a home humidifier attached to a forced air furnace. If you live where there is a meaningful winter, place any good quality acoustic guitar in the case between playings, preferably with some form of humidification in there with it. The home systems are not robust enough. I learned this the hard way this past winter.

Re: Guitars and cases on edge or flat?

Yeah it is just a fairly cheap and easy way to add humidity to a house and is not at all consistent going from 30ish % to 60 probably every day. Winter is not an issue here and you are 100% correct there is a huge difference in an acoustic and electrics and how they handle humidity. Probably need to score me a couple case humidifiers now that I have seen a couple of these threads recently on diff forums !
