Gus G Fire Review

Re: Gus G Fire Review

Yep tried the extra ground.

I even tore out all the copper shielding. and started from scratch.

So basically:

Pickups to preamp.

Preamp out to jack tip

Preamp ground to jack ground

9v battery ground to jack ground

9v batter hot to BMP

Ouput 1 to switch

output 2 to switch

Switch housing grounded.

switch out to preamp volume in

(also to isolate the switch as a problem, I tried connecting pickup 1 out directly to the volume input, still same hum and buzz)

Just as the wiring diagram shows. There is no tone pot connected.

I also added can extra ground wire to the bridge connection and BMP same issue no change.

Thanks for all the suggestions! But I think it is the preamp from what eveyone is saying.

Re: Gus G Fire Review

Hi...Was there any resolution to this issue? I just bought the Gus G Fire set last week and am having the same problems as described in this thread. I registered here after looking for a solution to this issue. I've gone through most of the troubleshooting that baron55 has done as well, save for trying a different set of pickups of which I am probably going to try later on tonight. This setup sounds great while playing, but the noise when not playing is unbearable, which prompted me not to use it for a gig last night lol.

No resolution, I pulled them and put EMG 81x/85x series in. Dead quiet.

I tried other high gain pickups with the preamp and the noise was much lower go figure. I also tried another preamp , same problem.

But the preamp is amplifying any noise generated by the pickups to really high levels.

Re: Gus G Fire Review

I swapped in a JB/Jazz set that I had laying around and the noise was a little bit less like you said, but it was still there enough to be annoying. Hopefully there is some form of solution to the problem that is being looked into.

Re: Gus G Fire Review

dude, one of the best comparison videos i've seen. Gus G definitely sounds bigger with its increased bass and lower mids. JB still sounds pretty awesome though especially since it cuts through better. I'm really impressed by both pickups, hard to find good audio when comparing 2 pups in youtube. If I had to choose my fave i'd tip my hat to the JB slightly only because its not as hot as the blackout. But i'm actually impressed by both pickups. GREAT TONE!

Thank you brother I'm really pleased it helped you. It would be better to have both pick ups in the same guitar and the same wood for a more accurate relationship. Also the Graph Tech bridge really makes a difference. All that being said i think the essance of both pick ups comes through. The JB is one of the most awesome pick ups in the world. The Gus G. has a great string attack response and it bigger on the bottom. Surprisingly in Pro Tools the two signals are very close “Hot” wise. Cheers!

Re: Gus G Fire Review

OK... I was about to place my order for the Gus G Fire system when i ran across this thread. It looks like two players have unsolved noise problems. Has anyone else had these problems? Have they been resolved yet for either of these players? I guess until this issue is cleared up i should put my purchase on hold. Thanks and Cheers!

Re: Gus G Fire Review

This thread is about 4 years old but I've just bought and installed these pickups and I'm having the same problem with noise, I had a JB/59' prior to these and they were less noisy by a margin. I also have a set of normal blackouts installed in my other guitar and those are so much quieter than these. Any help would be appreciated, I have followed the schematic for my guitar and have carefully soldered everything to a T.. So what could have gone wrong? Or are they really noisier than normal blackouts? I've got the built-in noise gate on my amp set to highest for the blackouts and no issues cutting off the noise or any noise to begin with as they are so quiet but it can't cope with the noise on the Gus G at all..

I think what you have is this. Typical active pickups use very weak passive pickup and then amplify them. The magnetic field and wings are such that on its own it tends not to pick up much noise. The Gus G pickups use standard moderate output pickups and then amplifies them. The noise is actually coming from the pickups as you would get with a typical passive setup. The preamp is quiet, but it just amplifies what it is sent.

I would say these are much noisier than a typical "Active" pickup because they are using a average to moderate output pickup with a preamp.

Is this review made it playing in a mix at gig volume? or tv volume playing by yourself?

I searched everywhere to see if anybody else is having this same problem or maybe I could've had a bad solder joint somewhere on one of the ground connections.. I checked and checked but no, it ain't that. I usually record in front of my monitors, speakers & screen. I couldn't even be anywhere near them or else it is noise city, haven't had this kind of problem with the normal blackouts at all.. they're so quiet with high gain stuff. This is such a mark down on what I think is one of the best sounding pickups I've ever used. I bought these given the fact and impression that seymour advertises them as being as quiet as their other blackouts.

Re: Gus G Fire Review

I'm quite disappointed in these as I thought it would be as tight sounding and quiet as those other blackouts but with the benefits and response of passives.. however I still love the tone I'm getting. Also what I would like to know, are there any mods that I could do for these passive gus g pickups so that they can become less noisy? I've got them on my ESP EC-II FT and usually with ESP they'd paint the cavities with black carbon paint.. will adding another layer of copper foil help lower the noise? There are also a ground wire grounded to the wood inside of each pickup cavity and routed to the main cavity, could I make use of them somewhat or ground to these instead, maybe lower noise floor?
