If you're talking about Django...it's steel strings, but the Maccaferi/Selmer guitars had a unusual sound. Post-war, he used an electric archtop, Epi or L5. So, either a Maccaferi/Selmer knockoff (there are a few around), or a low output P90 on a archtop---a lot of it is how you phrase, vibrato, etc.
