H/S/H, 1-Vol, 2-Tone, 5-Way, Push/Pull???

Hi, I'm a small-time luthier.
My client wants the guitar I’m building him to be wired:
H/S/H, 1-VOL, 2-TONE, 5-WAY switch, with a *PUSH/PULL*
(*splitting both neck and bridge pickups - in essence making everything single coil*).

I've looked in this forum and in the Seymour Duncan wiring diagrams, but have NOT found a diagram for
this specific pickup configuration (found similar, but either without the 2nd tone or without the push/pull).
The pickups he chose are Duncan: JB (SH4) bridge, Vintage Rails (SVR-1) middle, Hot Rails (SHR-1) neck).
I've also noticed that the Vintage Rails (SVR-1) seem to be wired differently in Seymour Duncan diagrams
so I don't know how this will effect the overall wiring - Any help would be greatly appreciated.

- Ian

BTW: I'm thinking I'd need to combine the "Everything Axe" diagram with the "HSH, 1-V, 1-T, 5-Way, Push/Pull" diagram.
Would this thinking be correct????

Welcome to the forum!

You are correct. All you need to do is to combine them.

If you use 3 PPs (one for each pup) you can even make it more versatile.

Re: H/S/H, 1-Vol, 2-Tone, 5-Way, Push/Pull???

I would suggest having your customer specify what the two tone controls do - is it one for neck and one for middle and bridge?

Personally I'd suggest the G&L 2-tone wiring - one master treble, one master bass. Lots of useful sounds that way.

Re: H/S/H, 1-Vol, 2-Tone, 5-Way, Push/Pull???

Also keep in mind, that your "notch" positions won't be hum-cancelling when the push/pull is used.

thanks for all the replies - i'm fairly sure my client wants the tone knobs set up like the everything axe (considering that's what i believe he was shooting for with his pickup selection, but i'll have to give him a call - he's in NY).
cakire82 Thanks for the welcome - I'm not sure how to wire 3 push/pulls with this pickup combination (sounds goodsl)???
Sporky McGuffin I'm not familiar with the G&L 2-tone wiring?
If either of you have wiring diagrams for what you mentioned, i'd love to give them to my client as options.
DMyers77 yes i'm aware that the notch will hum in push/pull (but a typical strat does in positions 1,3,5 so i guess it's a compromise).
ehdwuld (that diagram is missing the 2nd tone pot), but yes that's the diagram i figured i'd need to combine with the everything axe diagram.
BTW; i'm on the coast about 20 min north of clearwater on the edge of palm harbor and tarpon springs.

It is quite simple. Instead of wiring the red&whites from each pup to the same push pull (DPDT) you need to wire them so separate push pull pots.

See the diagram ehdwuld gave you. In there red&white wires from both bridge and neck pup are connected to the same PP pot. In this scenario if you were to pull this pot it splits them both.
If you use 3PP pot and wire individual red&white wire to these separate PP pots you can control splitting individually for each pup, providing your customer more versatility.

ehdwuld (that diagram is missing the 2nd tone pot), but yes that's the diagram i figured i'd need to combine with the everything axe diagram.

I left off the 2nd tone pot cuz ya didn't say just which pickups they would be attached to
and it would simply look like the one, with another dotted line pointing to the same places

with that said
whichever pickup you want to attach the tone to, just attach the wire to the pickup selector terminal for that pickup
or if a single master tone, connect to the volume control

Re: H/S/H, 1-Vol, 2-Tone, 5-Way, Push/Pull???

This diagram is what i am looking for to wire my guitar, but the dotted line that goes from the volume pot then branches off to 3 arrows, this is not clear , and i do not understand what it means..thanks for help..

Re: H/S/H, 1-Vol, 2-Tone, 5-Way, Push/Pull???

Your honor, my client is being a total pain by wanting 2 tone knobs xD

Good luck dude! I have a guitar that ALMOST has the same wiring he wants, so I was gonna take a picture of the wiring for you, and then I realized you need TWO tone knobs, ugh...

Can you help me...in the diagram..what does that dotted line mean..

Re: H/S/H, 1-Vol, 2-Tone, 5-Way, Push/Pull???

It means connect it to whichever pickup you want the tone control on. You can add a second and add IT in the same manner to whichever pickup you want the second tone control on.

Thanks for your help...also just so I am clear, there is one volume control and one tone pot that is push pull.
The input jack looks like it is wired to the tone push pull pot and not the volume pot ..am I seeing this right..

Re: H/S/H, 1-Vol, 2-Tone, 5-Way, Push/Pull???

I see i am wiring it wrong....i did not know the push/pull was the volume....on my guitar it has 1 vol and the tone is push /pull With a 5 way select switch..3 pickups..

I think the easiest way would be just to change my volume to push /pull like the diagram....

The push-pull funcationality is independent of the volume/tone, so you can easily move it to the tone if you prefer.

Re: H/S/H, 1-Vol, 2-Tone, 5-Way, Push/Pull???

I am just not sure how to wire the tone as a push/pull , it confuses me , like just wiring a humbucker you want to split there are 5 wires.. black, white, red ,green, and a bare wire..it overwhelms me were I would put all those wires..if I use what I wanted as my volume pot..there are only 3 places to solder wires..it has 3 lugs...I would like to wire it the way it was..by the way I am working on a Epiphone nighthawk.thankyou...wish you were here..

When you look at the referenced diagram, you see the volume pot has the three standard lugs for the potentiometer and six additional lugs for the switch. The tone pot only has three lugs for the potentiometer.
-Put the push-pull pot in the tone position
-Wire the three lugs like the tone pot is wired in the diagram (one to switch, one to capacitor, one open)
-Put the standard pot in the volume position
-Wire the three lugs of the volume pot like the volume is wired in the diagram (one from switch, one to jack, one soldered to back)
-Wire the switch portion (6 lugs) of the push-pull like the diagram, with Red/White combos going to the middle, and the bottom two lugs being soldered to the pot case (ground)
-All Humbucker Green and Bare go to back of pot case (ground)
-All Humbucker Black go to switch positions like the diagram
