H-S-H single coil options?

I currently have a H-S-H config built up of:

Neck: 59' Neck (SD)
Middle: ??
Bridge: L-500XL (Bill Lawrence)

The guitar has basswood body, rosewood fretboard, maple neck + standard floyd rose.

I tend to play more metal than anything else but ive got very into Stevie Ray V. lately and have started playing a lot more jazz too. Was thinking maybe one of the "ssl"s or a duckbucker just for fun.

Was just wondering what you guys think would be the best for my single coil in the middle. TIA for any help

I've always been a big fan of the Rails series pickups. If you want a true single coil tone without the hum, go with the Vintage Rails (identical to the Duckbuckers except for cosmetics). If you want a bluesy pickup that can match the Lawrence and 59, go with a Cool Rails. You'll get a lot of verstility out of either one.

Personally, I'd go with an APS Flat or a SSL Flat. You can only get real single coil tones from a real single.

Since I find split humbuckers to be fairly weak I like using a strong single coil in the middle of H S H guitars.

I used to have an Ibanez that sounded cool with a Duncan Custom in the bridge, Fender Texas Special bridge position in the middle and a Duncan '59 neck. The hot single in the middle gave nice notch tones.

I agree. The APS-2 flat will have more mids and a chunkier tone than the SSL-2. With humbuckers I'd be tempted to go with the APS-2...the chunkier tone might blend better with the humbuckers.

for that guitar, i'd recommend a VR if you want to try to evoke a hint of the SRV/jazz that you mentioned .. otherwise, to keep with the theme of the PUPs you have in there already, i'd say a hotrails - no doubt ... you might want to have some muscle to keep up, especially with that 500XL

Thanks for the help guys, I like the look (or sound) of the vintage rails a lot, but I think the difference in output compared to the BL will be very irritating. Its definately between the HR and VR. Hmm what to do.

Will you be splitting the humbuckers in the #2 and 4 positions? If so, the VR won't be humcancelling in those situations, as it's not splittable.
