Hafler Triple Giant (designed by Bogner)...what can you tell me about this piece?

I'm quite interested in this little preamp...I'm wondering how close it is to the shark, or even if it's worthy of bearing the Bogner name.

Re: Hafler Triple Giant (designed by Bogner)...what can you tell me about this piece?

I researched this one a while ago and wondered if it was good enough to convert me to a rack setup. I contacted Gearjoneser about it and he basically told me it was a pretty cheap sounding version of Bogner's other stuff. With that said, I know Trace from Voodoo Amps does some amazing sounding mods on them so if you can find one for a good price, are looking for a rack setup, and willing to ship it around to get the necessary mods, then yes, it's worth it.

The Shark was discontinued a while ago, but I see them pop up in different places for decent prices, usually around the 2 grand range (compare to 2700 for a XTC Classic). From what I've gathered, they don't sound as good as the newer Bogners.

I think you'll find your Shiva is right up there with the best Bogner has ever produced. I see a lot of artists use them nowadays and also, I've heard of quite a few people with XTCs that went back to the Shiva. After all, Jerry Cantrell used them and he owned a Shark back in the day. Some food for thought : )

The only experience I have with them is plugging into one briefly and also seeing a player that used one for years play live. His tone was real good, since he had it dialed in, although I'm sure he'd trade it for a Shark in a heartbeat.
Unless you find it cheap, I'd move along to something else. How come you were contemplating selling your Shiva. If I had the money, I'd buy THAT off you.
I'd love to have both the Ecstasy AND Shiva. That would be most gluttonous! LOL

I was actually thinking of selling my EL-34 version for a 6l6 version with reverb! :laugh2: I really like the Shiva...it's almost perfect, which is the nicest thing I can say about any amp I've tried.

Hey all. I have one of these, and I like it a lot. I also have a Bogner Ecstasy 101B. Yeah, it pretty much pees on the TG, but whattya want for $350? The Ecstasy is a cool two grand if you're lucky enough to find one used, and probably well-used at that.
But getting back to the Triple Giant, Reinhold himself will modify it for you for a $60 bench+$60/hr+parts. I am sure he could inject a bit more of his original mojo into it if you're willing to part with the cash:firing:. I had mine modded for a DC heater circuit (not by Reinhold). It's a great way to squeeze some more performance out of an existing unit. The new EH 12AX7s are a cheap upgrade; very fat sounding and low noise.

I own one and I love it. But then, I've never spent $2000 on an amp. My gigging rig is the Triple Giant into a Marshall 20/20, into Marshall 1-12 and Mesa 2-12 cabinets with Celestions. I use a Replifex in the loop.

The brown channel is great. You don't have to dial in massive amounts of gain to get great crunch and sustain. I'm one of those players who likes to adjust the amount of gain I'm getting by using the volume knob, and I'm able to do that OK on this channel as long I don't have a compressor ahead of the preamp.

The clean channel is great. Clean, sparkly, but not harsh.

The sharp channel is voiced for 80's metal. It sounds a bit dated now, but if you do 80's tunes in your set or you're still waving the shred flag high, it's perfect. I'll take this tone any day over the Recto/grunge/Warhead guitar tones that have become hip since this unit was made.

Being MIDI switchable is a big plus for me. I got mine second hand and the original owner didn't have the footswitch for it. Not a problem for me. I switch channels, as well as effects settings on my Replifex with a MIDI foot controller. That's a lot easier than trying to step on multiple pedals while trying to play a guitar riff. I don't play guitar and tap dance well at the same time.
