Not to be argumentative, but I definitely don't see this being the case...a lot more work just to use smaller pieces of wood.
I know that the Verrilli DualTone was made for the specific purpose of taming high notes on a Strat that are sometimes associated with a Maple board. It adds a lot of time to the build as is pretty pricey as the cuts have to be extremely precise and you have to be very careful making the holes for the fretmarkers as Maple is very hard and Rosewood is much softer and to sand different woods down to the desired radius is just more work.
In some cases it may be simply an excuse to use smaller pieces of wood.
