Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

i said it once and i'll say it again. you only need one speaker to play out. put a mic on it if you need more volume.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

2 4X12's sitting side by side. nice.

Very true. But sometimes, there just isn´t a PA ;) :D

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I want a couple of each, please. I voted for other. I can't imagine needing more than a 2x12 cab.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

a 50watt head and a single 4x12 is MORE than enough...I have gigged with a Twin reverb for years now, and in truth it's too much, but I would agree that if you want a full bottom end a 4x12 is a good thing...but NO ONE needs a full stack...not even in stadiums...remember...bvack in the day Jimi, Jimmie, Jeff, Eric, Pete, Billy, Leslie, allthese guys did NOT run through a PA most of the time and 4 or 6 or 10 full stacks were needed to reach the back row...now you could play Madison Square Garden with a Champ if you wanted to...the thing is that 99% of GUitars are very concerned with how some things would look...and a big ass stack of amps looks MUCH more cool that a combo!

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

If money and transport werent an issue.
I would go full stack.

I do lots of outdoor gigs and large indoor gigs (u mite call it an arena). I love having the massive sound.
Alot of the time i get asked to turn up more. Wouldnt be like that with a full stack...

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

A full stack to knock off heads of course! :laugh2:

In reality I like the look of microstacks as well as functionability. For instance 2/ 1x12 cabs 2 4x10 for more etc. I'm going to get a 1x12 extension cab for my Z eventually then I'll have 2x10s and 1x12 so I can get some low end thump and keep the ambience of open back 10s....mixed with the harmonic complexity. :32: :32: :32:

Neither...

I've never been in a situation with a band I consider worth my time where I'd need that much volume.

Life's too short to play with bad drummers...

You hit the nail on the head dude. These monster drummers everyone speaks of are simply bad drummers in my opinion.

Yep...eventually all guitarists need to get real with thier gear. And separate thier fantasy rig from reality. It's no fun to play a gig with two or three times as much amp as you need, so that you can't even turn the thing up loud enough to get some overdrive and sustain.
+1 !

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

if i could i'd rock out with a full stack even if it is overkill, it looks cool having more gear on stage. but as zerb said both are useless for home use really, your better of buyiong a combo amp with tube power.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

.....well, two guesses........

....however, really the only reason I actually use a full stack is because I'm 6' 5".....(most of the time my bottom cabinet is unplugged) so I can actually hear it! I really am not too fond of having a monitor in front of me, and I actually play softer than most would think.

I actually have 5 412's in the trailer, (my other guitar player uses one of them.) and the only time all four are setup and actually running is when we do one of the big shows and have the room for it. Noteworthy is the fact that all four, when setup, are running at 64 ohms each for a total impedance rating of 16 ohms.....which means it's actually softer than 1 412 cab! (Dispersion is HUGE, and if you ever get the chance....try it!)

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I would most likely get a full stack, but put the 2 cabinets side by side because there's no need to stack them!

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

If I had no issues with a ride, then I'd go full stack all the way.
I have a half stack and it's a bitch to get around.
I know using a full stack is more than enough, but I'd have the extra cab there just in case something happens.
You dont really need a full stack, but it just looks so damn cool!

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I'm old school, if transport wasn't an issue I'd go with a full stack even if I was playing through a little combo hid behind it.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

i've tried wiring two half stacks in stereo before, but with delay on it makes you feel sick lol

two 4x12's side by side, set at slightly different angles would be perfect for most small stages.. aim on at each corner of the stage..

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I'd rather have the space on stage. I don't like playing loud onstage, and if the drummer or bass player in my band are perpetually loud, they are out. We keep the stage volume low, work with drummers who have great control, and this makes it easier for the sound guy to mix us.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I prefer halfstacks anything more than that is overkill for most of the stuff that I'm doing.

I'm actually trying to sell my 1960AX cab ($700 shipping says its yours) so that I can use the money to buy two 2x12s so I can get more coverage and only use one cab if thats all i need that day.

Amen.

If money weren't an issue, I'd go a low wattage amp into a single 12" speaker in an ISO cab. In-ear monitors. And a massive wall of grillcloths onstage to look like I'm big stuff.

The sound man is in control, the stage is quiet, and my leopard print pants accentuate my manly bulge. Rock as it should be.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I prefer combos at either 2x10 or 2x12

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

If cost were no issue, two amps and 2 2x12's, running in stereo.
