You hit the nail on the head dude. These monster drummers everyone speaks of are simply bad drummers in my opinion.

It's maddening...isn't it? Some idiot who plainly lacks any real skill uses volume to define his or her "style". And suddenly you're the bad person for "not keeping up" as the volume level goes well over what it ever needs to be in a world of good PA's and excellent mics.

Why is it that we have to plunk down our heard-earned money for their technical deficiency?

How many albums did Zep record with an old Fender Champ?

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

The Full Stack...it's not like anyone's going to buy a 100W amplifier just because they got 2 4x12s. 2 bottles in my head is quite enough. Sex sells. ;)

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

Easy use the groupie method

1 groupie = Acoustic
2 groupies = 1x10 Combo
3 groupies = 1x12 Combo
4 groupies = 2x12 Combo
6 groupies = 4x10 Combo
8 groupies = Head + 2x12 Cab
12 groupies = Head + 4x12 Cab (AKA Half Stack)
24+ groupies = Full Stack

0 groupies = Ampeg Bass Rig

+1 :smoker:

I think the amp companys make a fortune off of image.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

And for the record ... I stopped using a 60w 1x12 combo in favour of a 15w 1x10 when playing with drummer ... better speaker breakup, but it still has clarity.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

Money or transportation not an issue? Two full stacks run in stereo--one with effects, one dry. You only live once. I just LOVE to cover my lousy playing by making everyone's head shake, rattle, spin then POP!!! :saeek:

I actually use this setup in my music room but I've set it up with GREAT spread. My setup also doesn't need to be loud to sound good, but all those speakers are great. It's good that your feet and knees can hear what your ears do, right? Also makes for a better room sound in my opinion when miking for recording.

No, I'm not rich. Just accumulated stuff over the years (I'm 41) then sell the overages to buy the new stuff.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

Well... I'd like a wall of Marshalls... just because it would look real cool.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

I need two total speakers, but that's it. I do like 10'' speakers so I enjoy 2x10s, but 2x12s are much more common and have a wider selection. I love combos because I like how the amp designer listens to lots of possible speakers combinations and picks what he/she thinks fits the best. It takes a lot of the guessing out which means finding what your amp is capable of is that much easier. Nothing beats the portability of a small 2x10 or 2x12 as well and it's great for recording (1x12 would be ideal, but 2 speakers doesn't make it that much more complex).

Since when does size determine what can be used in a specified venue? I think it has more to do with actual watts. All that is needed for a stadium arena gig is 50w. Any average gig or so is 30w-40w and for at home practice 5-20w. I'm sure you could cover a huge arena with a 2x12 100w amp no problem.

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

unless the stage is so big that you're always more than 15' away from the amp, a 100w amp would be overkill IMO.. you just wouldnt be able to crank it enough to get a good sound at a smaller gig..

long live 50w heads :D

Re: Half Stack or Full Stack?

man a wall of marshalls would be so cool... but im never gonna be that famous. so go halfstack. which i still havent bought yet...

Speaking of 'monster' drummers, i just quit my Iron Maiden/Metallica cover band and started a small blues/jazz quartet. The new drummer isn't as skilled as my old band's drummer (1 year experience, old band-5 years), but he plays alot softer (including with sticks) and that really makes the jams more pleasant. It's such a big difference that I'm downsizing from my Classic 50 to a Deluxe Reverb after Christmas. There's also much better 'jive' among my new bandmates as a result-we're actually trying to sound good together instead of trying to be heard over a drummers huge ego to be loud :smack:

If we ever play anywhere big, ill just borrow my dad's 2000 watt QSC PA system and mic up everyones amps and drums.
