Well ... really, did anybody here ever were able to reproduce your favorite tone of a half stack unleaseshed on the level of your bedroom ???
Thanks dudes.

Re: HalfStack bedroom adaptation

Sure.

But my next door neighbor was pounding on my door, not at all happy that I was cranking my half stack.

My question was "did anybody here ever were able to reproduce your favorite tone of a half stack unleaseshed on the level of your bedroom ??? " meaning without neighbors knocking on your doors.

But you didn't say that.

Re: HalfStack bedroom adaptation

NO...... i have a few practice amps that i can get a 4x12 bounce out of them at a low volume but of course it's not the same as a real tube amp with a 4x12

Re: HalfStack bedroom adaptation

I once hired two midgets and accomplished what you're describing.

I put one behind the head, he held a lighter over the tubes to heat them up hotter and get them to burn more.

The other I put in the 4x12 and had him push the speakers in accordance to my playing, getting the speaker movement necessary to sound like a cranked amp.

Dude, I really missed the target with this thread .... What I am asking is this, you have your half stack dialed in for the tone that you really dig or you've nailed it, its exactly what you want. Your half stack is 50watt head and a 4X12 cab. But this tone that you are really happy with is only happening at, lets say, 7 on master volume. Did any of you ever were able to reproduce the same tone at 1.5 or 2 on master volume ???

oh got ya... No not really, But i do have to say i enjoy my 5150 half stack on 1.... It has a huge amount of pregain and i don't mind the sound it offers at 1.... of course it's better on 4-5 but ya i have used the stack in my bedroom before and like it on 1....

if you went solid state this might be possible but even solid state amps have a sweet spot on the volume where they sound the best. luckily my neighbours are pretty easygoign about my loud guitar playing.

Re: HalfStack bedroom adaptation

A guitarist i know uses a JCM 800 half stack for everything... live shows, practice, recording.... and he lives in an apartment!!! i know he has a POD too.. But how he uses the 800 and 4x12 in an apartment i have no idea

Re: HalfStack bedroom adaptation

YES and NO . . .

. . . where i live, my nearest neighbour's house is about 20m (45ft) away from mine (dead-end street, and i live in the very last house - for a reason)

I can connect my Blues Jr. to Marshall 4x12 cab, and play it @ 60% (as clean as it will go, before i get a hint of break-up), with out any one knowing i have a guitar (during the day-time / night time it is a diff. story), and still get that great 4x12 feel, albeit a Fender'ish 4x12 tone !

So it depends where you live, how far the nearest house is, etc.

What? Master on 7 IS my bedroom level :fingersx:
But to answer your question... no, you'll never get the sound of a cranked EL34 halfstack on lower levels... that's why you crank them X-D

LOL, sounds like me :D He probably also turns the master volume up to about 1-2 or so at home, just like I do. Keeps the amp bearably loud, but unfortunately doesn´t have an ideal effect on the tone because the power section isn´t getting pushed properly....:eek13:

Have I ever gotten the exact tone I love so much at "bedroom levels"? No. But I can get really close with both the Marshall and the H&K combo, close enough that I don´t see myself needing an attenuator anytime soon;)

How does he do it? Probably because he found the volume knob.:chairfall

So far, IMO, a tube amp that's barely turned on will still sound better than a $200 practice amp.

It would suck having to lug the whole thing through an apartment complex any time you had to go somewhere though...

Re: HalfStack bedroom adaptation

Some of the modelers out there will give you a good SIMULATION of a cranked stack at lower volumes. In reality, no one has solved the dilema you pose. You can definately get good cranked tube amp tones at lower volume, but not cranked marshall stack tones.

Ahh .... the attenuator, finally it came up, I thought that either nobody here uses them or that the way I put my question they really change the tone so much that they are not an option. Are you here, attenuator users ??? please jump in with your few cents.
