Hamer Slammer strat copy?

Seems like I've heard a lot of good things about Hamer guitars on this forum, and I just saw a sunburst slammer on CL for $80 bucks, and I'm thinking about grabbing it. What do you guys think?

Re: Hamer Slammer strat copy?

Best import versions of Hamer, in my opinion, are the ones that say Hamer with Slammer Series under that. Those are mid to late '90s- early 2000ish then followed by a plain Hamer logo.

There is Slammer by Hamer from the same timeframes that are not so good and like most imports in that level need good parts to replace the stuff stock on them.

Re: Hamer Slammer strat copy?

I picked up a Black Hamer Slammer strat off craigslist a few months ago. It needed a bit of TLC and the electronics were a bit wonky, so I spent a bit of time setting it up and then dropped in a set of pups (Alnico 3 Classic Vibe strat) procured from a forum member here. It's a darn nice guitar. The neck feels good and it plays very well. The low dollar upgrade on the pickups really did the trick tone wise. I've had great success with Tonerider pickups and these are no exception.

I can't comment on the tone with stock pickups, (they were the run of the mill import ceramics) but everything else certainly seems good and a nice, low cost platform for modifications.

Not sure if this is off base, but if you are interested in this one, I'll make you a good deal!

Re: Hamer Slammer strat copy?

Really? I remember my best friend and band guitar player had a Slammer as his first... He replaced it with a MIM Fender, huge upgrade! I'd be more inclined to take the $80 and use it as upgrades on another guitar.

Re: Hamer Slammer strat copy?

Yeah, I'll probably just get a humbucker sized p90 for my Epi SG instead. Does anyone know if the hardware Hamer uses is decent? I have a squire strat project someone stole all the hardware for. I carved patterns all over it a little under a quarter inch deep, but now it needs a new neck from sitting. If it is still up on Craigslist when I get paid next, I may actually buy it just for the hardware, neck, and pickups.

Re: Hamer Slammer strat copy?

Okay... we have to separate the import Hamers from the USA Hamers. When people refer to "Hamer" you are referring to a guitar made in the old USA factory in Hartford Connecticut or the previous factory in Arlington Heights Illinois.

Hamer is over, Fender killed the brand.

Hamer made a huge mistake of partnering up with Bill Kaman to start manufacturing a lower quality import line of guitar which were at first made in Korea and then made in China (xt series). The quality of these import Hamers has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of their USA guitars... it's like comparing a Squire to an American standard strat IMHO. A Squire will never even see the USA Fender factory and will go straight from Asia to the music store... it's the same way with import Hamers.

So, are the parts on your import Hamer of any quality? Absolutely not. Will they get the job done and perform as expected to within their known tolerances? Maybe, maybe not.

So the reputation of Hamer as being a high quality guitar brand does not extend to the import line. Their import line is similar quality to a Samick.

I play USA Hamers and I also have an Xaviere travel guitar made in China of bottom of the barrel parts. Bottom of the barrel guitar parts have all taken a step up in quality the last 20 years so... I actually really like my Xaviere. On paper it is a piece of junk, but in reality it plays beautifully and has totally adequate if not decent tone.

Your Slammer might be a really good guitar, it's just not really something any of us would know without playing it.

I feel like you mistook the reputation of Hamer's USA line and applied it to their import line... this confusion is typical and is probably 50% of why Hamer is now defunct and dead as a doornail. There's just a few of us USA Hamer players left, we are a dying breed and aren't being replaced with the younger generation. Tone of import hamers out there though, they can be purchased for very cheap.

I rambled a lot but I hope this helps.
