Hamer Slammer?

Re: Hamer Slammer?

Well, I had a bass in like... 2003 that I paid $125 new for and the intonation of the frets was off.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

I've seen those around pawnshops before and have picked up a few. I know Hamer gets a great rep on these forums (and I understand why) but the Slammers I played SUCKED.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

Magnificent for off-key playing. Don't even think about trying one. Get a Squier or Epiphone.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

I know a guy at work who had one and while i can't remember his exact words, I know he had nothing good to say. He Ended up getting a les paul and loves that.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

what about the XT series? these have hamer on the headstock. I remember reading a review of the korina one a few yrs back and the review was stellar.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

hahaha

I thought you were trying to SELL guitars!

Slammer stuff is imported... likely MIC or maybe MIK on the higher end.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

Like most of the low end stuff, you'll find the occasional really nice one, but I wouldn't buy one without playing it first. And for $200, I'd probably be looking elsewhere first.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

I bought a Hamer Slammer bass on Musicians Friend for $149. For that price it is a great little instrument. (short scale). It is solid wood (not sure what though although it does look like mahogany). It has a nice figured top but that is only a thin veneer and I am not even sure it isn't some photograghic overlay. None-the-less it looks good. The neck is perfect, good fret job, perfect intonation. The neck does have a seam near the headstock, for added strength I am sure.
Now I remember my first guitar 35 years ago, I paid $100 and the neck was crocked, it had a plywood body with some sort of plastic laminate over. Figure out what that would cost in todays dollars!! Todays low end instruments are not only much more affordable but MUCH better constructed than years ago.
THe hamer is not near my PRS's but it only cost $149! It will serve me fine for what I want a bass for. Besides, I took the money I didn't spend on a bass and ordered a new Mesa Boogie MK5 head.

I know.. I am... But if I can get a decent explorer type guitar on the cheap, I can put the ZW emg set in out of the burny and then put some sweet passives in the burny

That's a really good point that most of us tend to forget. Even going back 15 years, when I started, about $350 was the least you could spend to get a good guitar. There were a few good cheapies, but most of the stuff was total crap.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

I had both a slammer V and a slammer explorer. I changed the tuners and gave them a good setup and of course the pickups but they weren't bad guitars at all. I used them for about three years till a couple of young fellows starting out talked me out of them.

As far as I know, the Mk5 has not even released yet, how/where did you order one? Our local dealer won't even take a deposit until they are offically released

Re: Hamer Slammer?

A Slammer is not a Hamer. It's some generic plank same as Hondo, or whatever. Just says Hamer on the stock somewhere.

Re: Hamer Slammer?

Best import Hamer "Explorer" is the set neck Korean made guitars and they have simply Hamer on them. Real decent guitars and well worth $200 - $375 if with a case.

The XT Korina is Chinese made and has USA duncans in it stock. They get up to $400 used AFAIK.

They were officially released at NAMM. Orders are being accepted now. First expected to be shipped about April 17/09. You should be able to order now from any boogie dealer. As of February 16/09 boogie has decided to sell directly as well. You can contact the factory , they never answer the phone, or the Hollywood store. The Hollywood store wants 25% down. If you live outside of California you can save sales tax that way.
Price on the head $1999. Bubinga hardwood $549. Wicker $50. I believe the combo is $100 extra.
