Hanging a guitar by its neck ?

Re: Hanging a guitar by its neck ?

I would never hang a expensive guitar by the neck.
The point is moot however, since I'll never own an expensive guitar.
Still, youll never catch me hanging my 05 Les Paul or even one of my best Bastage Strats by the neck.
I really dont care what anyone has to say about it..to me , its just quite obviously wrong irregardless of any finish issues, which is the least of my concern.( shut the eff up 9Finger).

Revisiting this thread. I've been hanging ALL my guitars for several years now using String swings. I gave up on the cloth wrapping the foam. I have not seen any negative effects with this particular brand of hanger. However, it's a respected brand and their products are well made. YMMV.

But dang, my shop/music room looks a lot cooler with them on the walls than in their cases. And, I'm much more likely to play them if they're out and hanging within easy reach.

this I agree with
I have mine hanging on Fret Rest hangers all over my house
I am much more likely to play them if I see them

Re: Hanging a guitar by its neck ?

Haven't hanged any myself (no room on the walls) but I've seen dozens of guitars hang from the walls of guitar shops for years on end with no issue whatsoever so I really wouldn't worry about it.

I've got mutts and a $4000 USA Custom Shop Jackson hanging on the wall. Been there for years. Bolt-on, neckthrough, doesn't matter. The biggest issue you'll deal with is direct sunlight (which I don't get thanks to blocked windows) and being in the direct path of central heat/air vents.

Of course if you've got a guitar whose neck is made of balsa and the body of 2" steel, then yeah, you're gonna get too much pull on the neck bolts. I wouldn't test a USA Aluminum-body Roswell Rhoads. If my CS Jackson 7-string Warrior didn't weigh so much, I'd hang it on the wall. It hangs just fine on a hanging floor stand, but I think it might be too heavy for the wall. I don't trust those screws and drywall inserts with that much weight.

Set-necks may also be an issue, or may be the core of the whole "internet myth". I guess a set-neck USA Gibson would survive longer than a set-neck Epiphone, which may be where the whole thing started.

Re: Hanging a guitar by its neck ?

I've been hanging most of my guitars on the wall since I started playing...no issues with any of them. My #1 has been stored on the wall for 10 years and has only had 1 minor truss rod adjustment in all that time.

The only difference between the wall and a case in the closet is arguably a more direct exposure to temp and humidity changes throughout the seasons, but with normal maintenance and shielding from direct sunlight, I haven't seen a single difference between the guitars on display and the ones kept in cases.

Hi All,

Just wondering could there be anything wrong with hanging electric guitars from the neck using those Hercules hangers for long periods....I mean the stores use these all the time.....I have about 6 electrics on my wall at home I display this way....Had a friend over who saw them...He is not a guitar person but was wondering of any ill effect for long periods....Is there a possible issue?

That's actually considered better overall for the guitar than putting it on a traditional stand where it's supported from underneath and somewhere up the neck. These stands produce a transverse force on the neck that can affect the mount of relief the neck has while on the stand. Hanging from its headstock, the forces on the neck are much closer to what it would experience while being played. Additionally, there are fewer points of contact between the stand/hanger and the guitar's finish, which over a long enough timeframe can cause discoloration and chemical breakdown of the finish (old nitro finishes were more susceptible to this, but even modern poly can be affected by the foam rubber of the padded stand brackets).

Re: Hanging a guitar by its neck ?

Then again, one could argue that the best place for a guitar is in a case, so it's not collecting dust and not exposed to hot/cold vents and drafts.

This is why I prefer the case. Its amazing how much dust accumulates over time plus I live in the balmy sultry south...

Re: Hanging a guitar by its neck ?

In my expirience the only way to really damage a guitars neck/ headstock from everyday use is when the guitar is laid flat, resting on the headstock, i know for a fact just doing that can break the neck... Thats when **** hits the fan.

Yeah, right!!!

You've had some very, very, very weird experience.

The only...I repeat, the ONLY way laying a guitar flat is going to break the neck is if you lay it on the floor and a lumbering 300 pound idiot steps on it. And do you "know this for a fact" because you are the one who stepped on your guitar neck?

Makes me feel all warm and cozy inside knowing there are so many brilliant people posting to this forum.
