Hanging guitars??

Re: Hanging guitars??

I find that guitars that are always in the case are the least played. It sounds silly, but sometimes I am not really in the mood to get the case out, put it on the floor and open it up.

Not silly at all. I've heard more than a couple good teachers recommend not keeping the instrument in its case for that reason.

Way back when, I had a mint condition Charvel Model 6. It was the most expensive and nicest guitar I'd ever owned. I was terrified of damaging it, so it lived in the case. In order to get it, I'd sold my other good guitars, so I wound up playing the junk I kept because it was too much of a pain to get out the case queen.

Agreed 100% The Epiphones can stay out, the Gibson goes back in the case, every time.

The struggle is real. Guess which is my most-played guitar. The Gibson Explorer? The USA Jackson? No, it’s the cheap Ibanez I keep on the stand.

Re: Hanging guitars??

My solution: buy 500 square feet of Fender crushed velvet case interior material, wall to wall carpet your room with it, paper the walls with it, and leave the guitar on the stand. Be the case, live the case. Suffer not the neck aux Gibson.

Re: Hanging guitars??

I keep most in the cases. I have a 5-rack in my music room that gets rotated frequently. I also keep two on stands next to the Excelsior in the living room that will typically have an electric and an acoustic. Nothing on the walls.

My setup is nearly identical!

Re: Hanging guitars??

I also use the Hercules guitar hangers as mentioned before on this thread. Seems to work very well.

Re: Hanging guitars??

I dunno about hanging guitars but where you do chaps find these woman (that are proud of your guitars and want to put them on display???)!!! LOL!!! Jeepers. My guitars have been the proverbial "thorn in the side" (ands that's putting it mildly) for every woman I've ever been involved with!!! LOL!!! (Actually dunno why I'm laughing at this i.e. not funny at all).

Well (and back on topic):

I'd never hang my guitars. And I always thought that keeping them in their cases to retain moisture (and all the other reasons usually cited) was an old wives tale. Not so I'm afraid. And I used to use the excuse that if I cannot see them then I don't play them so always had them out on their stands. Nonsense. It just made me feel good seeing them every day is all. Now the cases get steamed once per month and I always put the guitars back into their cases after playing and then cleaning. I suppose a room humidifier would actually be the thing to have save for the problems it may cause with electronic gear???

That's easy. Date a musician.

It takes time, discernment, a lot of luck, and several attempts. This is wife #3 for me. The first two hated my guitars and so did pretty much every girlfriend along the way.

I stole this from the “Music Related Memes” thread for its appropriateness:

I’m glad you have a way that works well for you, but it sounds like massive overkill to me. And I disagree that there’s nothing to the idea of “out-of-sight, out-of-mind” when it comes to my guitars. I’ve been in situations where they’re all in their cases and I talk myself out of playing because of the hassle of getting them out. When they’re easily accessible I’ll grab one just to noodle, even if only for a couple of minutes.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with feeling good about seeing them every day... it’s a passion for many of us and a big part of who we are. Why hide that? Maybe you’ve been listening a little too closely to the women in your life? [emoji12][emoji33]

Re: Hanging guitars??

Yeh listen. As some around these parts will know: if it ain't an overkill then it ain't worth doing (for me that is!!! LOL!!!).

In fairness to you all: I only have three guitars and not the vast arrays that you chaps have so it's not a big deal for me I guess (certainly don't have enough guitars to be able to forget to play one of them).

I think I got a bit nervous, after (normally) leaving my guitars out "on display" (on their stands), but when during Winter last year, I got very slight fretboard shrinkage on one of them and nearly crap*ed myself. So after searching frantically on the Internet: put the guitar in a bathroom and let it steam for a few hours. This corrected the problem. So now it's "how I roll" I guess.

Don't get me wrong. I don't, like, take one out, play it, and then shove it back in the case immediately and so on and so forth. Basically just put 'em in their cases when I'm done for the "session" as it were.

And the women thus far??? No further comment!!! LOL!!! (Matter of fact: post edited and initial comment deleted i.e. not worth the effort!!! LOL!!!).

Ahhh yes...the ole addictive personality. I’m intimately familiar!!

Re: Hanging guitars??

Sometimes I'll play three different guitars within a short
period of time. If one isn't matching the tone or conveying
the idea I have in my head, I move on. One of our spare
bedrooms is my music room. All my gear is in there and my
guitars are on the walls.

Re: Hanging guitars??

I keep mine cased except for a couple at a time, which get either hung on the Hercules hanger or placed on my Hercules floor stand, depending on the guitar.
After going through a couple sets of strings I rotate through to the next. Whenever I breakout a different guitar it gets the fresh oil/polish and strings treatment.

This rotation method also really helps me keep-up a good general care and maintenance schedule, otherwise I'd probably just have to log things in a calendar.

Re: Hanging guitars??

Sounds like she might be willing to buy you some special “hanging guitars”. You know, the ones with the flamed maple tops - really high quality, works of art guitars. Just to make the room look nice, you understand... [emoji1]

LOL!! In her opinion, Im already getting a HUGE gift by A) getting a room and B) she has already told me that my Christmas and Birthday gifts are her seting up the room and buying shelves for the cds.. So, no new guitars are going to come of this.. Even though I have tried the angle of some nice beautiful quilt or flame top guitars for in there

Re: Hanging guitars??

Setting up the room, buying shelves, AND sorting out the CDs??? “Give that woman (and also Mrs. BriGuy1968) a Bell’s (Whisky)” as we would say here!!! She’s not a twin by any chance??? LOL!!!

sounds good, but she is extremely ocd.. Supposed to be MY room, but she insists on setting it up and arranging it how she wants.. she has hated and complained about my guitars for years.

LOL!!! APPARENTLY (rumor around these parts has it so anyway) I'm OCD as well!!! LOL!!! So I get it!!! LOL!!!

On the OTHER hand of course: YOU must also be doing something right!!! LOL!!! Well done to ya!!!

I assume we're gonna get pics. when this massive "rebuild" is complete???

Re: Hanging guitars??

Back in the day when I had a music room of my own, I had some guitars on hangers. You’ll definitely want to make sure you put the mounting screws in studs! Or you can do what I did here, put up 2 slats on the walls then you can put the hangers anywhere along the board to make things look more uniform and not just where the studs are. 96EA3B00-3D58-493A-A669-AE05FE86B8EB.jpg

Now I’ve sold off almost everything I had, I keep them all in the cases until I can move again to a more spacious place. But I plan to use a rack and just some stands in my new home. Maybe hang a few. Here’s a rack that I have now that works very well, but I haven’t had time to play in awhile so they all sit in cases now.
