Hanging guitars??

Personally, I like to keep my guitars in hard cases to keep em dust free and safe. However... My wife is mapping out how to set up a music room and she wants to hang them up on the wall. I do kinda like that I can just grab one down quick and easy. But...

Anyhow.. How many of you guys hang your axes? And, for those who do, what do you use to hang them?

She will want something attractive. She has already vetoed the hangers that look like hands. haha Plus, she wont go for anything that will look like music store hangers.
I will want something sturdy!!

What cha using?? Thanks

Re: Hanging guitars??

Not sure about hangers. But you might think about a humidifier if they're going to be hanging out in the open.

Re: Hanging guitars??

Sounds like she might be willing to buy you some special “hanging guitars”. You know, the ones with the flamed maple tops - really high quality, works of art guitars. Just to make the room look nice, you understand... [emoji1]

Re: Hanging guitars??

My Iceman used to be in a hanger and when we moved I out my acoustic in the hanger. I use the stringswing like mentioned above and works great.

Re: Hanging guitars??

I have mine in a 9 guitar rack stand that I built last summer because I wanted them to be out and ready to play. That rack got filled up rather quickly so I had to make another rack stand, so at one point they went half way around the dining room...
Ive since downsized from 15 guitars down to 7 or 8 if I count some uncompleted projects.
I never ever keep my guitars in the cases because I play them all everyday and theyre on a rotation just to keep them them dialed in and up and running.

I too thought about hanging them, but to be honest Im afraid to do that and I also don't like the idea of all of their body weight being distributed to that one area of the neck. I'm sure they would be fine, so it's just me...

So she gave you the go ahead, but put tight restrictions on what you're allowed to do...I wonder if she is my girlfriend's cousin? :) kidding bro! Atleast she is getting involved and that's kinda cool actually because most don't care one way or another... Cant wait to see what you eventually decide upon so post some pics then.

Re: Hanging guitars??

If you are going to hang your guitars, make sure you put the hanger apparatus in a wall stud properly. Not just through drywall.

If the room has temperature and humidity issues, I wouldn't.

There is also something about a certain rubber on some of those hangers ruining a certain type of guitar finish, which I can't remember right now. You may want to look that up.

Hanging guitars??

I really like having all mine easy to grab and play at a moments notice and, like metalchurch79, I try to rotate through them. My wife loves my guitars and likes to have them on public display, so...

I’ve used multiple types of hangers and they all seem to work great (even the cheap ones) as long as you make sure that they’re SECURELY FASTENED to the wall.

I actually have mostly cheap ones, like these:

...and most of these guitars have been been hanging in the same positions for 2.5 years (since we moved in) with no issues whatsoever (although I use heavier-duty wall anchors). These are nice because they easily (and automatically) adapt to different neck widths and “shoulder” levels for the headstocks.

There are certainly prettier hangers too, but they’re significantly more money. Not a big deal for just a few guitars, but it gets kinda pricey when you have a lot of them.

Just make sure of two things:

1) That the hanger can adjust to different angles

2) That it’s SECURELY FASTENED to the wall.

Re: Hanging guitars??

All of my guitars are hanging (a few dozen) -because IME, if they are not readily accessible, they won't get played and the point of having lots of guitars is to have lots of options and versatility -especially recording -so they have to be at the ready. In a case long term is better for a guitar -especially if your control climate system sucks -but I use guitars as Satan intended, so storing them in a case out of site isn't an option for me.

I only use the Hercules locking hangers. -they are just safer and better -and aren't really that much more money.

Re: Hanging guitars??

Brian, I particularly like the bigger base behind the hanger for your Mandolin... I think hangers should be first screwed to a bigger base and then attached to the wall for more weight distribution... and also try to find the studs in your wall so they're secured really well.
They sure do look good Brian!

The one for my mandolin is actually a homemade job using a standard rake/shovel hanger you can get at any hardware store since that neck is so skinny!

This is what I use too. I've had my Les Paul on one for over a year now. No issues. IMO it's worth paying ten bucks extra to get the Hercules hanger instead of some no name.

Re: Hanging guitars??

Haha no kidding Brian!

Oh another thing I saw before that some guys did was to take a long strip of wood as a common base and then they screwed their hangers onto that for a stronger base. I did find some pics of that but I don't know how to post pictures...

Hopefully this goes without saying but... Remember that the hanger and base forms a lever with the wall. You want to keep that lever as short as possible. So if you use a common base, go for the Hercules hangers without the extra wood on the back.

You only need that if you have many guitars to hang and need them closer together. If it's only a few, the spacing between the studs works fine.

Re: Hanging guitars??

After having been in a few earthquakes, I don't hang mine; never will.

The safest place for a guitar is in its case.

Re: Hanging guitars??

I find that guitars that are always in the case are the least played. It sounds silly, but sometimes I am not really in the mood to get the case out, put it on the floor and open it up.

Not silly at all. I've heard more than a couple good teachers recommend not keeping the instrument in its case for that reason.

Way back when, I had a mint condition Charvel Model 6. It was the most expensive and nicest guitar I'd ever owned. I was terrified of damaging it, so it lived in the case. In order to get it, I'd sold my other good guitars, so I wound up playing the junk I kept because it was too much of a pain to get out the case queen.

Agreed 100% The Epiphones can stay out, the Gibson goes back in the case, every time.
