Happy NAD! EVH 5150iii 1x12...

I've been waiting all week for this sucker like a kid at Christmas.
I got it out of the box about an hour ago. Fed Ex showed up about an hour and 15 minutes ago. I've been jamming on it.
I'm still trying to dial it in but I love it so far. Its loud as hell even at 1 watt. At 50 watts it peels paint and rattles the windows.
I had high expectations for the clean channel because I play a lot of blues new country rock and it delivered.
I got good cleans, crunch and in your face gain.
It reminds me a lot of my all time favorite amp. A Soldano Decatone.
My Les Pauls are happy!

I'll bet that wattage switch comes in handy. Nice score. What's it got for a speaker?

It's got a Celestion 12" voiced by Eddie. I'd guess it's kinda like a Greenback?
The wattage helps. Even at 1 watt it's loud as hell. The loudest 1 watt I have ever heard. It's way louder at 1 watt on 2 than my HT5 cranked at 5 watts.
50 watts is just retarded.. You could play a decent sized bar with it cranked and still be loud.. I play at home and it's almost too much. I live in a patio home so I can't really crank it up.

Thanks everyone!
I played with the EQ quite a bit last night. I had a guy suggest that cranking all low mid and high to 10 gave the Brown sound. It was muddy as hell.
I tried the 6505 666 trick and it was kinda meh.. I figured out quick that it likes lots of mids and not much low end. I cranked the mids and lowered the lows to about 3 and the presence at about 1-2 o'clock.
This opened up the definition, I was having issues with my 57 classics being muddy but my JB 59 set in my other Paul liking the low end. I was back and forth on guitars for about 30 minutes trying to find a common ground. The resonance knob found its sweet spot about 5 o'clock almost all the way over. That single 12" speaker as a giant cabinet. This is a huge 12" combo. It's about as big as a 4x10.
I am still tweaking channel 1 and 2 and thats currently the only complaint I have. I hate that they share an EQ. Most people wont care about that but I use the clean channel because it nails that Fender clean and cranked tone and I can't get the EQ and gain to mesh between channel 1 and 2 because they are tonally night and day. Channel 2 is that pissed off Marshall Soldano sound. I'll deal with it, I am in love with this amp! The reverb is also really nice. It's just enough and not over the top. I am not a big reverb guy but I like it on my clean channel. Channel 3 will do everything from the liquid sustaining lead tone to the buzzy Seether and Breaking Benjamin hard rock tone to all out scooped metal stuff. The volume and tone knobs on my Les Pauls really unlock lots of tones in this amp on every channel.

Try these for the heck of it.

congrats! I'm rocking a head and 2x12 matching set and I freaking love it. speakers are getting broken in, and it continues to impress.

i'm running the resonance at about 1-2 pm, and keep the bass and mids around 6 or so. the speakers in the 2x12 are bright, so my treble and presence are usually in the 4-5 range.

Congrats!! AWESOME score!!! I surely dont need another amp, but I surely want one of these!! (or the 50 watt head) Let us know what settings you find the sweetness on

Re: Happy NAD! EVH 5150iii 1x12...

Thanks everyone! I'll post some pictures of my amp settings when I get them finalized.
I'm using a ton of midrange right now on channel 1 and 2. Both of my Les Pauls really growl that pissed off Marshall sound with the mids at 3 o'clock. That classic Les Paul thru a Marshall tone really shines thru the EVH with the mids dialed in. I have that Aerosmith Sweet Emotion and ZZ Top Tush tone dialed in.
Channel 2 I'm running low gain and my MXR Badass OD for leads. I have 3 dialed in for old metal and the mids are a little scooped on it but it still likes mids so I am still fine tuning channel 3.
The Orange Jim Root I almost got was the same way. I really liked the midrange dialed in on that amp as well.
I passed on it because I wanted the extra channels. It's a beast of an amp as well though.

Although as a player, I FULLY understand what you saying/doing, this just sounds so funny how you got an EVH amp and are trying to dial in all those Marshall tones... haha

Lol! I have owned several Marshall amps, I love em. I bought this because I wanted something different but had that Marshall growl with 6L6 balls. Honestly the more I play it the more it sounds like a Soldano SLO which I guess brings me back to the pissed off Marshall again lol! I wish I was one of them tone deaf guys who just plugged in and played. I'd be a whole lot better of a guitar player if my ears would shut up and the sound in my head wasn't there..

Re: Happy NAD! EVH 5150iii 1x12...

I'm tempted to get mine modded to have separate gain and volume for channel 1 and 2 but I am afraid to have anyone touch it! Even look at it. Channel 2 is so darn perfect for hard rock/rock it's not even funny. And channel 3 is all face melting metal.

Re: Happy NAD! EVH 5150iii 1x12...

50W isa crazy amount of horsepower for a single 12" driver!
I cut some reamp tracks today using a 2W amp pushed to the point of power stage distortion and I cannot fathom what 50W even sounds like anymore lol.

Re: Happy NAD! EVH 5150iii 1x12...

It's loud. Especially if you are pushing a 12'' that can handle it through an open back cab.
