Has anybody tried a Custom3?

Re: Has anybody tried a Custom3?

I'll probably be trying that out in a couple of days. For my hardtail strat tuned to C standard, I was using a C8 in the bridge position, and didn't dig it so much. I swapped it to a Custom Custom a couple weeks ago, but it's too mushy on the low end. Gonna try with a roughcast A3 soon. Will report back when I do.

Re: Has anybody tried a Custom3?

I've often wondered myself. I know A4 is supposedly pretty nifty in a Custom as well, but I only have one Custom series pickup and it fits the guitar so perfectly that I don't want to muck with it.

Re: Has anybody tried a Custom3?

I didn't like it. A3 contains no cobalt by the way, kind of like it should be called "Alni" and was a little weaker and more anemic in the Custom when I tried it. It seems to sweeten a vintage humbucker wind and they're using it in the Joe Bonamassa bridge model now, but I found for the hotter Custom wind it felt more like it was under-powering it. The C4 is great too.

Re: Has anybody tried a Custom3?

I liked the C4 quite a bit. Felt like a more evenly-EQ'd/voiced Custom 5.

Re: Has anybody tried a Custom3?

I tried a C3 but it was forever ago. It was weak and bright with no guts.

Re: Has anybody tried a Custom3?

Generally speaking, an A3 for a bridge p'up is NOT a good choice, as will make sound any p'up in that position thin and wimpy. Which it could work for an overwound asian p'up, but not really for the rest, unless it's compensated with a particular custom-wound coil geometry.

OTOH, I simply LOVE IT in the neck position of a PAFish p'up in a semi- or specially in a full-hollow.

The one mag I LOVE the best for versatility in the bridge position in a PAF realm is the UOA5 (thank you blueman335 for the introduction) which, BTW, is a match made in Heaven with an A3 in the neck.

HTH,

IMO, the custom UOA5 and C4 are the most versatile. not too hot to play classic rock, and not too soft to play metal.

Re: Has anybody tried a Custom3?

I'm kinda rethinking doing the C3.

Played my guitar yesterday and the pickup had plenty of time to adjust to the A2's magnetic characteristics/field, and I gotta say, I'm liking it much more now.
