i suspect that a new head that i bought was dropped. i bought it new as a floor model and it has white tolex and the back of the head has some black tolex scrape marks plus there is a high pitched vibration/buzz sound coming from the head when i play loudly. it seems to transfer the sound into the amp as well.

is it possible that one of the tube filaments is loose? how much abuse can tube heads take before something gives?

DOes it have the spring retainers on the power valves?

These can often vibrate/ring and get amplified.

Some valve amps are pretty sturdy and can take a fair beating. Others will just crap out pretty fast.

If you just bought it I would take it back and exchange it.

Have you tried replacing the power tubes? Those can get rattly or buzzy when they fail.

A mechanical rattle that also transfers through the speakers usually indicates a loose connection. For the record, in years past, I used to get the occasional head that faceplanted off of a full stack (mostly Marshalls)...most of them worked fine but the transformers nearly ripped out of the chassis. Check the chassis around your transformers; if it's bulged out, it probably took a fall. If that's the case, I'd contact the place you bought it from for some remediation before you sink any of your own money into it.

I dropped a tube combo down a flight of stairs.

Sounded ****ing awesome afterwards.

I'd be afraid to drop my amp because it's heavy as ****. My cab is tall and heavy enough to easily take out a midget, maybe two.

After I dropped mine it sounded like this---------------->

Silence is Golden...................NOT!

I dropped my Twin reverb one night while unloading at my apartment after a gig...it rolled end over end down a full flight of concrete stairs.

After I put the tubes back in it and carried it back up stars it sounded fine...even the tubes survived, and some of them fell out and hit the ground!!!

my twin fell off the amp stand in the studio a couple weeks back due to vibration.
One of the tubes crapped out. I put an old pair back in and went back to recording

Re: has anyone dropped their tube head? how did it sound after?

I dropped my amp off the roof of a car going about 30km round a corner onto the road and it sounds as good as ever but most other amps I have owned/used I wouldnt trust doing that

about 15 years ago i dropped my at then time dual rectifier from about 4 ft, onto the concrete while trying to pack, still worked afterwards.

Why not take it back where you bought it and have them fix it?
