Has anyone else experienced this.....

I started playing with humbucker equiped guitars (at the beginning of time) and within the last 5 years or so, I have played stacked single coils. I have found that when I go back to playing regular buckers, that I find them not as cutting as the stacked singles and also found the reg buckers not as articulate as the stacked singles especially under gain. I listen to a lot of shredders like Malmsteen, Stump, and Byrd (to name a few) and maybe my ear is more in tune with that tone (I also like Blackmore, Hendrix, Beck, Clapton etc even though they didn't/don't play the stacked single). I don't like the side by side single coil sized humbuckers as they don't really allow the sound to breathe (too compressed sounding, I like to hear Kraaanng under gain if that makes sense).

Keeping with my new found appriecation of low output pups, I have found that the YJM/HS3 pickups from the other guy are more in tune with what I really like in a pickup. I still have my humbucker equiped guitars, but I'm starting to see that they "maybe" heading for the auction block in near future.

Has anyone else experinced this chime in.....

Re: Has anyone else experienced this.....

Well I am a fan of lower output pickups (hence, the TV Jones pickups in my Epiphone LP, They are around 5k or something). They are like old Gretsch Filtertron pickups from the 50s - sound very single-ish for a bucker.

I play fairly clean however, so my situation is different from yours - but I know this KRRANG you speak of.

Re: Has anyone else experienced this.....

I prefer HB Guitars over SC's. However, when i do pick up my strat, I tend to like if after a song or two of practice. I don't put it down. Very cutting an to the point. When I migrate back to my HB equipt LP at some point, I'm not like'n what I'm hear'n. Same thing happens though. I get used to it and don't want to put the LP down. I am going to put a stacked bucker in the bridge of my strat for a SSH guitar.

That's why I like to mix P-90's and teles in with the strats and Pauls.

They seem to split the difference well. ;)
